Classic and Vintage Bicycles: What's it Worth? Appraisals and Inquiries - What would you offer for this "antique" dia compe?

I realize that this bike is probably not worth much, and the fact that it's still on CL says a lot about what most people think it's worth. However, I am not a flipper. I am primarily looking for another bike to test my mechanical aptitude on. I would like to get this and make it rideable for either me or my wife.

Given the lack of details, what would you ask about the bike, and what do you think you would offer if you were looking for a beater to fix up?

I love that they call it an "antique", probably hoping to get more out of it than it's worth. Or maybe they're referring to the finish on it, as it looks like the decals have been covered up with some kind an aged look.

Hehe. Well, I started a discussion and ended up talking them down to $15. Somehow, I still feel like I will get ripped off if I buy it, but it could be a good practice bike for a beginning mechanic like me. If nothing else, I could get a rideable bike out of it for me or my wife after I'm done working on it.

I asked for pictures, and I might post them here if I ever get them.

Well you'd at least have a frame worth $20-$25. But it's covered in trash you have to remove.

Nice boat anchor!! It looks like an OK set of DiaCompe brake levers but that is it.

Sorry to keep dredging this up in this forum. At this point, we have determined that it's pretty much a crap bike. I got more hi-res pictures last night, and Bianchigirll is right... Dia Compe levers are probably the only really salvagable thing on there besides the rims (can anyone tell me if those are alloy just by looking?). If those are 27" wheels, it might be nice just to have a second set for my Grand Prix as a backup.

Other than the really bad paint job what is wrong with the frame?

If you buy it just for the tires, I'll be happy to take the rest of it off your hands (wife would probably kill me for bringing another project home), I will be needing a road bike in the future.

I'll keep that in mind, miles! I plan on picking it up tonight if I can. After that, we'll see if I want to do anything with it or not. Like I said, if it's workable enough to make it rideable, it would probably be a much-appreciated upgrade to my wife's current mountain bike (wal-mart special).

However, if I don't do anything with it, I'd rather give it to someone than let it collect dust and rust in the garage.

Just let me know. I'm riding a Wal-mart special too. I would like to run the short course of Goatneck in 2013 (won't be ready this year) and I'm not sure about running it with a mountain bike.

No, I wouldn't say that. Could be a nice/decent frame that was trashed. Could still be a great riding bike after a rebuild, replacing all the broken/junk parts. It does look to have an integral RD hanger which makes it above the bottom barrel.
