The National Bike Challenge is a partnership between the League of American Bicyclists, Bikes Belong, Kimberly-Clark Corporation, and Endomondo to encourage people to ride. The stated goal is to get 50,000 people to bike 10 million miles. The event runs from May 1 through August 31.

The way it is set up allows individuals, communities, states and 10 person teams to compete against each other to accumulate the most ride points - 20 points for each day you ride plus 1 point per mile ridden. Communities are ranked by points per 1000 population.

My club's team led the state of Georgia through the pre-event warm up period and should be in pretty good position after today's rides. My town, Milledgeville, also led Georgia and was 10th in the nation in the warmup period. another Milledgeville team from Georgia College is right there with us. A day and a half into the real contest, Milledgeville sits in 1st place in Georgia and 11th in the nation. We are banking on doing well in this competition helping to generate some enthusiasm among the local civic leaders to step up the efforts to make our town more bike friendly and to recognize the potential of attracting bike tourism dollars.

Any of you folks involved where you live?

After three days I find myself on the fist page of the San Diego North County leader board. This is pretty fluid since most entries are not in real time.

Our corporate communications department sent out an email to all employees about this. The company is incorporating this activity into its wellness program. I'm in.

Is that for all riding or just commuting to work riding? Web site says "transportation or recreation" so I guess I've answered my own question. We have a "team" at work, but it's treated pretty much as a commuter challenge so I never report any mileage since all my riding is mere "recreation". I'm going to seek a local clarification on that... maybe I can contribute after all.

I've been in for more than a month now, doing the 'warm up' and now that it's going on, my bike is down waiting for me to get a couple new tubes. I plan to ride an hour a day (weather permitting) from now on through the summer. That will add up to some real miles I hope...

One of the good things about the way the Challenge is set up is that it awards at least 20 points every day you ride, no matter how short the rides plus you get one point for every mile. That way new and casual riders are encouraged to ride often.

Well, you can win prizes. Last year I won some hand grips and a co worker won a bell.

We did this last year when it was only WI and our team was in the top 10 and the only one in the top 20 with less than the full 10 riders. It's a lot harder to be anywhere near the top now that it went national. Just remember it's early in the game and it runs for a few months. Last year it still kept track after the challenge and ridership really dropped come fall.

I am trying but confused.

For example, I rode my bike 6 miles to and 6 miles from 24 hr fitness, where I swam for an hour - all on the same day. I am having trouble logging both on one day. Often, I will do a resistance exercise session, making 3 activities in one day?????

Also, I use the bike for chores and business - banks, grocery store, etc., which is neither commute nor sport????

OK - figured out how to enter multiple sports in one day.

The challenge is to collect data showing that tens of thousands of people across the country ride millions of miles on bicycles for fun and transportation. When that story is told to the right people in the right way, I'm betting quite a few checks will be written as a result. I'll personally be making the case for some to be written in my town.
