So I had a pretty awesome ride today that sent my confidence through the roof!! Let me rewind and give a little back story.

Last summer, I was roughly 320 lbs and hadn't ridden a road bike, pretty much ever. I started riding and losing weight. One of my first rides was with a friend of mine who is a hardcore triathlete. He has literally done dozens of Iron-man distance triathlons. That ride with him last year was pretty much him going for a quick spin while I gasped for air trying to just keep him in sight a mile ahead of me! At one point during a hill climb, I'm about to pass out from over exertion when I look up ahead and see him un-clip one shoe and pedal up the hill one legged!

Then I rode like a maniac the rest of the summer and through the crappy Washington winter and the equally as crappy Washington spring. I lost a bunch of weight and am now down to around 260 lbs and my legs are looking noticeably more toned and muscular.

Then today I went for another ride with my triathlete friend. He's training for the Ride Around Mt Rainier One Day ride so he led the way pretty much the entire time and set a blistering fast pace that was rarely below 20 mph on the flats. I managed to stay on his wheel. We got on some back country roads where traffic isn't an issue and we rode side by side to chit chat while we rode. Still riding like the cops are chasing us at a good 17-20 mph while talking and somehow I'm not gasping for air. Then we get to our hill climbs. I figure, OK, he's gonna go zooming up these hills and leave me in the dust. He may have been sandbagging it a bit for my benefit, but I stayed with him through about 1100 feet of climbing. We get to the top and I'm feeling good. Then he starts telling me about how this mile marker is so far from a road we are turning on and suddenly we are in a time trial (apparently) as he gets in full aero tuck and takes off. I'm digging pretty deep at this point, but still feeling good and his pace is still in the 20's and we are 30 miles in. But I got in the drops, pedaled like a mad man and managed to stay on his wheel, completely red-lining it for a good 15 to 20 minutes straight. I started to yo-yo a bit but he never got more than a couple bike lengths ahead of me. We got to our turn off and slowed down to talk a bit more. He looks like it's another walk in the park obviously, but I was still feeling great. I was winded, but recovered pretty quick. We rode almost 50 miles total.

By the time we were done, I was shocked! I have been riding a lot but it has almost all been solo rides so I guess I didn't really have anything to gauge my progress other than my own personal Strava data. I mean, last year I could literally barely keep this guy in sight, let alone stay with him for 50 miles! Anyways, my confidence is soaring right now! I just thought I would share my happy story! :D

That is sweet mate, huge progress it is good to see you can gauge it and see it .

That is a long ride and nice speeds ... you are going to have to change you screen name soon to little Pete or something :)

Well done that is really amazing :thumb:

Thanks! I did shamelessly ride in the wake all day while my friend did all the work, but I'll take it!

As far as changing my name, well, years ago some jokers decided to make the name Peter a sexual innuendo for male anatomy. I don't think I will be going around calling myself Little Pete for just that reason! :p

Great story. I've met a couple of guys this year that I ride with once or twice a week. Like you, 95% of my riding is solo. These guys can drop me anytime they want to but I think it really has made me a stronger rider. Their abilities are vastly superior to mine but they always use our rides as an opportunity to "teach". It's gone a long way toward showing me what (EVERYTHING! LOL) I need to work on when I go back out on my own. Ride on! :)

Thanks everyone! I'll be riding my first century next weekend with the same friend. I don't think I'll try to keep up for that amount of miles or I will bonk for sure! He's trying to get me running and swimming now too. I think I will try a sprint distance triathlon this year and see how I do.

Great. next thing you know he'll convince you to wear a sleeveless jersey and then it's all over.

I think I'm convincing myself to wear one. My farmers tan is getting ridiculous! He did tell me about the wind drag of my mountain bike shorts though. But I still don't feel right wearing spandex shorts!

Good Job Pete! I can personally testify that it's a lot easier to get 260lbs up the hill than it was 280:lol: And it's a great feeling to not have your friends having to wait on you at the top anymore. Like you I'm still spending a lot of time clinging to someone's wheel but doing it at speeds I couldn't dream of a year ago and I celebrate my 70th birthday this month. I can't wait to see what I can do in another 40lbs. It sure is exciting to see such dramatic changes:D

I take it based on your enthusiastic and wonderful recounting of the day that he didn't tell you that he was sandbagging. Well done. Feels good, huh?

I suspect he was a bit, though he didn't say he was. Especially in the hill climbs. But I think he has a "training" pace and a "competing" pace. I'm sure he could have dropped me at will, but if I'm going 18-20 and get dropped then so be it. That's pretty dang fast for me!

Sweet! phenomenal improvement in just one year. loved the story its good motivation for us beginners. and a slap in the face for us slackers.

I wish i had a faster riding partner, as you can see how it helps a bunch.

Cool story bro!

Glad things have been working out so well for you and your riding. If I ever manage to get my bike back to WA state (if I ever buy some S&S couplers) then I'll have to hit you up.

Last time I had someone complain about my shorts over shorts I offered to "ride in front and break wind". They turned me down...
