Just received our 800 and am attempting to learn how to use it. My question today is. When I go for a ride how can I "record" the route and all the data? Then I will want to learn how to download it.

If I'm understanding your question correctly, once the unit is powered on and satellites locked in, you just press the "Start/ Stop" button (the bottom right button) and the unit records your route automatically. When you press "Start/ Stop" again, it stops recording. Then press the "Lap" button ( bottom left hand button) and hold it for about 4 seconds, you'll get a countdown timer on the screen, to store the ride in memory. Uploading to a computer depends on where you're uploading it to. Garmin Connect is very simple. Hit the "Upload" button on the top right of the screen and it will prompt you through.

Thanks for your reply. I think the other thing I wanted to understand is. Will it generate a"map" of the route I just rode?

Tom, when I upload to Garmin Connect, yes, a map is generated. GC is the only site that I have any experience with, though, so I can't say for sure about any of the others but I feel like the certainly would as well.

I use ridewithgps.com (http://ridewithgps.com/) for creating routes to load into my Garmin 705, and to view the ride recording. I have a free login there.
You don't need any driver or software. The Garmin just looks like another hard drive when it's plugged in with a usb cable.

To make route maps for the Garmin, I draw the route, give it a name and save it. Then there's an upload option on the web page. I use the Courses .tcx file format. (The .gpx routes often fail to work on my 705. Garmin's software is pitiful.)

To upload a ride's recording, I plug in the Garmin with a usb cable, and it shows up as another drive letter on Windows. I use the Upload / Browse method on ridewithgps.com to copy the .gpx file from the Garmin's History folder. It shows up in my Activity Log page, with maps and ride statistics.
For example, see this ride (http://ridewithgps.com/trips/533192). There's lots of cool info to see:
At the Map pulldown at the top right, Click Terrain, then zoom all the way in on the map. Hilly!
Also, see the Metrics tab at the right, for speeds, elevation, etc, and click the "Time Spent at Each Speed" chart at the bottom--that's really interesting.
You can hover over the red elevation graph to find speeds at that part of the ride, and locate it on the map. Or drag a section of the red graph to see just it's distance, elevation, grade, etc, on the Metrics tab. (How hard was that climb?)

Quick question, I have an edge 705 and upgraded to the 3.3 firmware. Huge mistake as it no longer will navigate my GPX routes:mad: Anyway can you explain how you are using the tcx files in the 705, as in where do you load them to, how well to they handle turn by turn (if at all), etc.
