Im looking to buy a trek 4300, 4500 or 4900. The website says all the frames have disc brake mounts but inspecting one at a shop it appears they dont. I saw a 6700 that had discs and looked like some sort of adapter was attached to the rear of the frame that allowed to caliper to be mounted. Does anyone know if this is true of the 4000 series frames and is this a part that comes with a brakeset such as avid or hayes or does this piece come from trek and available for purchase for the 4000's. thanks for any info.

I've got a Trek 4500 and the disc mounts are only on the Judy TT Forks - none on the rear.

The website claims they have disc mounts, but double check before you buy. All treks use the disc adaptor because they want to cut weight down on their frames. However, when purchasing a set of disc brakes to put on your Trek, you will have to purchase this adaptor separately, it does not come with the brakes. Make sure you have disc hubs prior to this upgrade or you'll become real frustrated real fast :)

The bike you saw in a shop was probably not a 2003. Make sure to ask for a 2003.
