Just started using the route feature on my Garmin Edge 500. First trip, it worked fine. Yesterday, it froze up and I lost data until I stopped and was able to reset. How I did so, don't know. All the buttons did not do anything.

I think I'd like the routing and maps of the 800. Will it accept a microSD card with European maps, for those times when I'm cycling in Europe?

Yes, they do a City Navigator Europe microSD. It doesn't just cover cities, but the mapping is more detailed there.

There's also the option of using third-party maps (like OpenMaps). I just did this with my Garmin 800. It works great and saved me at least $60.

OSM are available for much of the world, certainly Europe. I put North American OSM on my 800 and they work very well. 4 Gbyte for the entire US.
