i am working on a new franken bike and the head tube needs to be 18 inches longer. in the past i would tig weld head tubes together that i cut off junk bikes. this is a lot of work and also i am out of head tubes. I need an alternative from hard ware store or some where local home depot etc? the bike i am using now on this build is lugged and brazed.

I think if you take a peice of head tube any good hardware store can match it...with the length you need.

I have never seen any tubing I thought would match a head tube at a hardware store. I would just order some 4130 tubing from McMaster-Carr. Shipping is very reasonable.

check to see if there's a place local to you called metal supermarket (or maybe metal super store). i just found out about them maybe a year or so back. it's a metal place that sells in small amounts to the public.

could you just not weld 1/2 a head tube top and bottom of the nearest sized hardware store tubing ?

I'm jealous if your hardware store has tubing that would work for a head tube. The closest we have is black iron pipe. I'm not sure I would use black iron pipe, but I guess people have done it.
