Mountain Biking - Simple question

I wish to replace my current brakes wiht some better ones. Right now i am running some trashy stock brakes that camw on my bike. I figure that one of the first things that i get is brakes (i mean come on thats the thing that will save my a$$ when it all comes down to a point)

So here is my question, what is the best set of V-brakes that i can get for $50 or less. what makes one better that the others?

I've been looking recently and picked up a pair of SRAM 9 v-brakes - cartridge type with koolstop pads. Reasonably lightweight, yet not flexy, nice and easy noodle disconnector, no squeak, cool black finish :)

Wasn't impressed with a friends Shimano LX's but that might be the levers - I don't like modulation, so just hooked mine up to basic Deore levers.

Avid's get good reviews as well.

I've been looking at some avids at my Lbs and they seem nice just i dont really know what to look for.

the ones that i really like because of the weight is the 2002 Avid Single Digit TI Brake. they are only 162 grams. heres a pic:

You wont be able to get a set of nice brakes for $50. If you have 10 extra bucks, then you can go to dans comp and buy a set of LX brakes with the parallel push mechanism for around $60 (and that dosent include levers, you'll have to use the ones you have)
That brake in the picture is the avid single digit TI....(somebody correct me if i'm wrong) and it goes for around $50 per brake.

OK heres my new problem. . . which one should i get?

Oh my god, like I forgot about pricepoint.......get the lx's. Then you have 20 bucks extra to buy new brake pads.

will the ones it comes with be good or not? (it does come with some right? lol)

Looks like pricepoint is the winner. Their brake only price is .02 less than www.jensonusa.com If you want just the brakes compare the shipping cost between the two.

Everyone is blowing out the Shimano stuff to make room for the redesigned component line due out in a few months. I'm sure even better deals are soon to come in the next couple of months.

Get the Avids. Trust me it will be money well spent.:D

I'd get the avids as well!

I really like mine and I think they're better than Shimano's.

The great thing about them is once they're set up, you forget about them!

Avids, Avids, Avids - They are great, ive never had any problems with them and they give amazing power. I had XT's a couple of years ago and they felt crap compared to the avids i upgraded to. Avid really knows what they're doing - trust me they won't let you down either.

Im just about to pop down to my lbs to pick up my new Avid Ti Levers and Avid Ultimate brakes (Front and Back) :D. They should be great + they are amazingly light

Check out the review!! both the single digit 7 and Ti's get a good write up.

+ the avid levers have a "Bend Zone" Design, so the handle bends and doesnt damage the body

+ the avid brakes have a Locking Overcoat retention system that prevents mother nature from causing friction inside the noodle

Definately go with the avids - they are far and away better than the LX's, or XT's (and i bet XTR's too but ive never tried them)

I have LX levers, and i have to say that I'm not impressed with them at all. It might be that i'm still a little used to my old cantilevers, though.

I got the Avid Single Digit 7 levers and brakes. i will have them on my bike by tommorow and will tell you all how it goes! :)

i fitted my new avid ultimate brakes / Ti levers the other day and they look great, feel great and most of all look rude!! unfortunately can't say how well they work as im still waiting on some cranks and chainsets... but soon....
