my garmin read a calorie burn of 880.

strava says 573.

hmmm? which is correct? I know most calorie things are way off, but curious which is closer to being accurate or which you follow.

yes I have a HR monitor with my garmin 500.

I expect Strava is probably closer, but neither is correct. They're just guesstimates. At least Strava tries to calculate it based on average power estimates for the ride. If you really want to get close, get a powermeter.

With stuff like this, the best number is the one you like least.

It depends....

on what model Garmin you have. The newer ones are more accurate as a rule - the 500 is supposed to be more reasonable. Comparing my numbers from when I was using an Edge 305 last year vs numbers from my powertap now, they look to be ~40-50% higher with the Edge 305 than the power meter.

"40 calories per mile" gives you a more accurate number than almost any web site
Maybe 50/mile if you weigh more than 200 pounds and your route is very hilly

40 per mile?? that sounds WAY off. no way I burned 1,200 calories in just 30 miles.

Looking at my files typical, for me, is around 30-35 per mile.
