Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - hit?/tempting fate.

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Found out there's 1 member of the DCC who's never been in an accident (good work)
and since I don't believe in luck or fate I thought I'd poll how many of you have ever
been in an accident.
If someone was so inclined we could compare with "the normals"

I voted yes but it was my own damn fault and it was with my dad's parked work van. And it happened many moons ago. I was finally riding my dad's ten speed since I could now straddle the top tube. I was amazed at how the gears shifted by moving the lever on the downtube. I was in awe and watching the chain move as I shifted gears. Ran into the back of my dad's work van and hit my head on the rear door. Damn gears! Now I know why I ride a fixie and a singlespeed.

When I rode the ole' BMX bike around in the '80s, I was waiting at a light with my left foot on the ground. Car came by, made a right turn and ran over my foot. It didn't do any damage though.

Yeah suprisingly its not always that bad. When I got hit last wednesday, my hand got run over and I was only wearing half-finger crocheted gloves. Granted, my fingers are still discolored around the joints and it hurts to touch them, but nothing got broken.

Hopefully you did some damage to the door panel. Although aren't 'vettes fiberglass?
I had a taxi do the same thing to me from the left lane. Scratched up the face of my watch and dinged the bezel. Stayed up though by holding onto the doorframe with my left and the bars with my right.

I was almost killed twice at last friday's nyc critical mass and new years ride. The first happened 1 block after getting off the path by two Taxi's trying to sandwich me into an oblivian while they both tried to turn off of 14th st on to the same lane, at first I was riding along side the curb at a pretty quick pace and saw that the taxi in front of me was turning left so I went to pass on his right, the taxi that was riding alongside of him in the next lane decided last minute that he would try and do the same thing while I was along side the other taxi already. Luckly my brakes (pushing back off of one of their trunks) and high manuverability of my brakeless track bicycle I did not die. Then after a 25 mile ride ( I think ) and 2 am I rode home from central park dodging horse drawn carridges, taxi's, peddy cabs, and limo's until one limo decided to take over my personal space and nudge me into a garbage can, light post combo. Luckly my leg broke my fall and I never officially hit the pavement, but I will consider it a crash. I did manage to punch a dent into that S.O.B limo though.
Oh and the vette does not have fiberglass doors, they are good ole sheet metal :D .

I've been hit a few times. Usually my overestimation of the intelligence of drivers in my city.
I haven't been in a major accident, but had a couple minor incidents. A car hit my rear wheel while doing an illegal u-turn. And I hit the rear side of a car when they pulled an illegal u-turn in front of me, then BACKED UP.
That said, now I'm going to go ride my bike home in the dark without lights...forgot 'em this moring. Wish me luck!

I was hit by a car when I was 15. The lady was at a T intersection, no signal on and the car was no pointed out indicating she would turn, I started to ride across and she was looking the other way to check traffic and hit me and proceeded to push me into traffic. It only lasted a few seconds but I was pretty banged up, my knee is still shot to this day from that accident. My pedal poked a huge hole in her bumper which was made even bigger because once in it turn and the cop ripped it out making a bigger hole.
Best part is the woman goes "Its ok Im from Boston, this happens all the time in Boston", I will never forget that statement.
Today I almost got hit a woman turned right in front of me to get into her drive way I missed her by inches. I locked up and skidded so bad I fishtailed all over the road, surprised I didn't go down just from that. I punched the back of her car and proceeded to ride on. Second run in with a car/driver in the last 3 days.

I've been hit and knocked off my bike two times, and I’ve skimmed the back of a suv as the driver crossed over into the bike lane and came to a sudden stop; this incident probably would have been worse if I wasn't so quick with the brakes, though I almost went over the handlebars in the process. I figure that out of 9 lives I’m probably down to about 1/2 :D
i've slammed into cab doors a few times as passangers would decide to jump out of the cab at a stop light. now i make sure to smack the back of the car nice and hard, making a loud bang noise, to make sure they know i'm coming.

I have a LARGE background in motorcycles (I know its not a bicycle, but still two wheels). I used to roadrace motorcycles in amature sanctioned races. I also raced motocross when I was younger. I also worked as a race mechanic for a professional roadracing team, factory sponsored by michilen traveling throughout the U.S. and europe. All and all, I can tell you that I have hit the ground HARD quite a few times but never as bad as 2 years ago at Pocano Raceway at a national event. During 750cc superstock practice early in the morning I was passing a lapped rider on a sharp 120 degree hairpin. The lapped rider took a very shallow line coming in so he missed the apex and was going to drift pretty wide at the exit. I came in carying a lot more momentum then him and went in very deep so I could square off the corner to come up and pass him on the inside. As I crossed his wide line and I was coming in for my apex my front wheel was about 6-9 inches away from his rear tire. As I started to accelerate hard out of the corner and getting in under him he lowsided right in front of me. I stood the bike up from a full lean and acceleration (at that point I was at around 110mph) and hit the layed down and still sliding bike head on. That caused my bike to use his bike as a ramp and I got airborn. When I landed I still had momentum going towards the outside of the turn and the bike landed pointing the opposite direction which slingshoted me from what bystanders said aproximately 15 feet in the air. I landed head and shoulder first at about 100mph and started tumbling immediately. My bike landed 4 feet in front of me upside down, slid for a few feet and started tumbling as well. I remember everything up to when I did my first tumble. I don't remember walking off the track onto the grass either, but I do remember hearing my race bike sliding down the track and colapsing while walking from the pain of a broken foot, me being a dumbass or maybe just because I had all that adrenaline going didnt know that it was broken at the time and refused medical attention so they did a quick look over and cleared me to go back to the pits. I ended up having that broken foot, bloody and swollen lips, pushed back and loosened tooth and a slight concussion. The only reason why I survived that was the 700 dollar helmet I had just purchased that past week.
I am attaching a picture of the very corner that this all happened at while practicing for my vintage class race.

a few years back i was biking in downtown bend, oregon with two friends. i was in front coming up to a red light, so i turned around to say something to one of the guys behind me. as soon as i did, a woman in a brand new black saab backed out of a diagonal parking space right in front of me. i broke her rear tail-light and rear window, bent my front wheel up past my top tube. i had black paint on my teeth from the back of her car, but wasn't hurt too badly even without a helmet. the b!tch left while i was still on the ground.

i hadn't had an accident until my first week messengering, but when i did, i wasn't even at work. a woman made a left in front of me from the oncoming lane and stopped in the road for some reason...i trashed the side of her car though because of moving at a good speed, and she trashed my fork...everything was how i had imagined it, up to flying through the air and hitting the ground...really weird. then i threw my bike at her car. and she got out to see if i was ok...when she saw i was standing, and only bleeding, she left.

got t-boned by a mazda truck when i was 17. He was doin about 45 in a 35 and smashed right into me. Dented his grill and hood, smahed his winshield with my head, somehow broke the back window of his truck too. Mountain bike was in pieces on both sides of the road. Had road rash and had to get stiches in my head. No concusion, no broken bones, nothing. I just got up and freaked out when a bystander told me to wait for the ambulance. (ambulances cost money and we didnt have any).
the dude was on his way home from a funeral. This was forest park/riverdale area near atlanta.

I've made good use of my tertiary braking surface over the years. It used to be my fault, lack of observation or hotdogging. Nowadays its drivers and peds who Just Don't Look. Ah well, it was never a pretty face to start with :)
So far, accident free in '05!

Got hit by the taxi on the one DCC ride, which is an accident that Jeff has a better idea of than I do, since he saw it and I don't really remember it. Also t-boned another biker on the bike path and have punched a few cabs in warning.

Wow! I can't fathom crashing and tumbling at 100mph! I live 3 miles from the Pocono Raceway and always hear the cars and motorcycles during the summer! My kids want to go down and watch sometime.

My old man t-boned an El Camino this summer (the Camino was making an illegal left, no signal, no slowing) at highway speeds. Somersaulted over the back and landed on his feet. Woulda been cooler if he could have stuck the landing, but such was not to be and he bounced and landed on his shoulder instead.

They are motorcycle organizations that practice at Pocono raceway and if you go like if you were going to watch a friend or family member, not that you have to lie or anything, the guy at the entrance of the tunnel turn just makes you sign a waiver and then you drive in) you go in for free. They normally practice on the north course which would be on your left side as you drive into the infield.
a lady decided to pull out of a stores parking lot as i am riding by on the street and she smashed my right foot into my crank. the impact made my bike fly up in the air but i somehow managed to keep my hands on the handlebars and brought the bike back down on its wheels. she just stared at me for a second and drove off...that was the closest i have ever come to slaughtering someone.
