David Harmon suggested today that he's inexperienced. I don't know how that can be said about a kid who was raised on two wheels and riding with others since birth. There are some guys who started riding later in life that don't have spells like Phinney's.
But after four days in a row of either hitting the deck (or missing the fairway in the TTT) there's definitely a dark cloud over that kid.

I dont think he needs training wheels, but you have to consider a couple of things...
About hitting the deck, still cant understand why he was in the front of the group in the last km for example, if the DS told him to do that the days he hit the deck then the guys screwed up big time. My best guess is that they were trying to get some bonus time in the sprints because there is no more explanation for being in the front in the last km. Either way is a pretty idiotic strategy because there are guys that are pure sprinters in the race and no way TP was going to win them. So far I would congratulate BMC DS for making him go to the front of the peloton in the worse moments... dih dih diiiiiii!!! and one extra for himself maybe for listening or doing it not only once but twice.
About the accident in the TTT, well... injured, he did not know the road and those bikes are hard to handle, one mistake and you end in a ditch. U can tell he handles the bike, not anybody would have saved the bike how he did.

I think Dave Harmon's point is he's inexperienced in European stage racing. As I understand it Taylor did most of his early riding on the track. This season will be a further learning experience; doubtless he's a great prospect. But yeah his team needs to protect him as much as possible. He claims its just bad luck but three crashes in three stages is a bit ridiculous.
Sorry about the slight spoiler but let's face it if he'd won the stage it would have all over US news and the spoiling would have been done already.

As far as bike handling is concerned, he did wonderfully well to stay upright when going off the road in the TTT. Of course, he shouldn't have been there in the first place, and that probably comes down to a lapse of concentration.
There's more to avoiding crashes than great bike handling, looking after themselves in the peloton is something they all have to learn from experience. He'll improve. Looks a great prospect.

He mentioned before Stage 1 that wearing the Maglia Rosa is a life dream for him and he has a real chance of achieving it. When it actually materialized it put a lot of pressure on him. One of the tragedies in life is getting what you want...
At 21 years of age he definitely lacks the (life) experience how to handle that kind of stress, you cannot train for it, you need to go through it in order to learn. Also coming from the U23 field to the top of the PRO ranks is quite a jump for anybody; expectations are much much higher.
