Fifty Plus (50+) - One Cataract Done - Doc Says Bicycling OK this Weekend

I had the left eye cataract removed Tuesday. No swimming for 2 weeks, weight lifting at 50% and bicycling OK this Saturday. I am still getting used to the new lens. Very different to be able to see out of the left eye!!

My right eye will have to wait until the cataract gets bigger. So far, it is not interfering with my vision and the cataract is small.

Somehing some of you have to look forward to!!!

My first job as a nurse, several decades ago, we took care of cataract patients on our orthopedic unit. Way back then, people stayed in the hospital for a day or two and were flat in bed for more than a few hours postop. Change is good.

My wife used to be the surgical nurse for cataract operations when everything was done by thread and needle. This was in the early 60's. Change is REALLY good!! Thanks for the response.

My wife had cataracts early in life, both removed. Outpatient surgery. The only issues she has is a lot of sensitivity to bright light.

Had it done about two weeks now. Same excellent outcome as the first time. It's a big relief to be able to see out the helmet mirror once again. I rode the bike within a few days.

Sounds like a successful operation... Hoping it keeps going good for you!

Back in the 80s had my eyes done with the scalpel and sew-'em up method,
Spouse had hers done a couple weeks ago . . . simpler/less hassle!

My right eye was done in February. I can't believe that I no longer need glasses to see at a distance. I actually bought non-prescription sunglasses, for cycling, after the surgery; the first pair of non-prescription glasses in over 30 years. I still need glasses to read, but it's nice to drive at night without having to wear them any longer.

I am having a cataract removed from my right eye next month. Sorta looking forward to it. Need to schedule the colonoscopy in the fall. Not looking forward to it. My 76 year old dad is :roflmao2:

I had my 1st one done almost 2 years ago.
Doc said I could ride the next day, after he gave me the once over.
I was afraid I might do something stupid and waste a lot of money (no health ins.) so I decided I'd enjoy actually not being legally blind for a day before I went out and crashed my bike!

20-450 to 20-40 in 24 hours!

Given church, Mother's Day, et al, it will be tomorrow before I can get out.

Saw the doc yesterday for my one week checkup.

My vision in the former cataract eye is between 20/20 and 20/25 (doc says it will likely get better), which means that I can drive for the first time in my life without glasses. I went and bought me some non-prescription sun glasses (UVA and B and polarized). My right eye, with the very small cataract, right now is working well for near vision, giving me an ipso facto mono vision, which I want to try for awhile to know what I want to do when the very small cataract in my right eye grows enough to qualify for medicare benefits.

Here I am, typing, with no glasses on, and soon I will be driving with no glasses on. Amazing for someone who has worn glasses since he was 14yo (almost 59 years now).

So, I did a very nice 20+ miler yesterday.

I am now able to resume weight lifting, but swimming must wait another week.

Good on you Denver:thumb: glad the eye work was a success and you are returning to bicycling after the work. Hope everything stays so good with the vision, my mom said it was the single best thing she ever did for herself.

Hey DnvrFox it sounds like you're on about the same schedule as my mother. She had her eye done on May 10. She's recovering very well and very happy she did it. Great to hear you're doing well too.

I had my right eye done Thursday. I could ride now except my original correction is so strong (10 to 10.5 diopter) I cannot judge distances enough to ride. Also they don't make lens implants with enough steps to give me anything close to 20/20 vision. No that I would know the difference between 20/20 and 20/25. Well now at least if I lose my glasses I can still function. Riding will have to wait until the right eye is done. I get the right eye done in two weeks. Hope it get better but then I have to wait two weeks to get fit for glasses.

Why is bikeforums.net soooooo slow. It drags my computer down. Take forever to load. No other forum is this slow.

Not sure if by 10.0 to 10.5 diopter is the same thing, but on my implant card, my 1st (L) eye was 14 and the 2nd eye was 15.
My formerly near sighted L eye is now slightly more far sighted than my farsighted R eye.

I need reading glasses for sure (2.0) and don't see well between "book" distance and 5 feet, but beyond that it's GREAT!
My R eye has severe astigmatism, so it came out only 20-70 and is still "lazy".

Still from 20-450 to 20-40 & 20-250 to 20-70 is miraculous!
I hadn't seen that well since I was about 8?

I took 1 day off after the 1st eye and I was out riding. Didn't have a problem with distance having only 1 eye, but I'm not a speed demon.

I actually haven't "noticed" any improvement since post op the following day.

You can't expect "perfect" vision if you have other eye problems such as astigmatism etc. I wish, but....

My implant was a 5. Cannot remember if it was a - or +. It is still settling in. It will focus on 5 feet o 20 feet but is still settling in. Not a lot of depth though. I could ride a path or bike lane but around here on country roads I stay on the white line if there is one. To the right is usually a nice ditch. I am going to go nuts next week at work. Then not sure how I will handle after the second eye until I can get fit for new glasses.

I had the surgery. No way I could ride with one eyeseeing through the glasses. Second rude delayed. Some shadows. I have a soft contact in the left eye (9.5 d) Now I can ride. Just hope the shadow goes away. Then i will have 20/25 in the right eye.
