Not sure what to make of all this yet, but I'm looking forward to some good conversations.

Hello Portland from Seattle! Welcome.

I'm a noob here today, but I've been reading these forums for ages...
I have a question regarding Crank Bros. cleats and I was hoping to tap the communal wisdom-tree and find out if anyone else has had this happen to them and maybe what causes it:
I've been using a set of CB 'Smarty' pedals for a couple of years now, and as of last week my left pedal stopped engaging my cleat; it just snaps closed on first contact, before the cleat's actually in. I've been temporizing by keeping them lubed & being really careful/ firm about my clip-in, but needless to say it's kind of a drag and it doesn't always work. My Shimano SPDs have never done this. Is it just a sign of cleat wear or that maybe the spring is getting too spongy and needs to be replaced?
Oh- Btw, I'm aware that the bearings (bushings?) on these cheaper CB pedals can't be replaced, but the bearings still work just fine, smooth & buttery with lots of miles left in them.
Any suggestions? (Other than just using this as an opportunity to switch to nicer pedals!)
Safe rides & thanks,
