249761I posted a few days ago about this. A few of you wanted Pictures. I figured out how to post them. Please give opinions etc... thanks for your time> Do you think it can be reinstalled, and if so, how.
Please note: this is a Vitus 979 frame (alum).
I am assuming the "pin" that runs through the downtube must have had a way to be"tighten" (ie.. screw on one side of the "pin". Otherwise, how could you tighten & center the downtube shifters to the frame with the help of the expocy........the pin must have been used as a "clamp" to bond the expocy the the downtube. Any thoughts on this?
I found the part, Vitus Bosses w/centering pin on the internet (ebay) Now i have to prep surfaces to expocy the bosses on the down tube. Here is a pic of the Vitus Bosses w/center pin.250539
I'd say you need to determine what kind of solvent (if any) will help you remove the old epoxy, then glue it back with same.
Although I'm hardly surprised this happened... anodising isn't the easiest surface for glue to hang onto. Would you consider updating the bike to brifters? If so, I'd knock off the other lever boss and have some cable stops rivetted to the sides of the head tube instead.
A dab of the appropriate-coloured nailpolish on the bit of missing anodising, and voila.

So, would you consider brifters? That cool old bike would be sweet with new kit.
I'd try crazy glue (cyanoacrylate) without doing anything except cleaning the two surfaces. The (epoxy?) glue on the shifter looks solid, and cyanoacrylate works well on smooth surfaces that fit together tightly.
But if it doesn't hold, then you'd have to deal with the residue glue on the frame. (Or maybe the glue would all be on the shifter, same as now.)

First off, the fact that it only fell off now is pretty good....that bike is minimum 25 years old! Second, I would have it fixed the correct way. Harry Havnoonian of H.H. Racing does lot's of repairs on those exact bikes. I had an old Vitus re-bonded at the drop out many years ago...came out perfect. Finally, I believe that those shifter bosses aren't simply glued on, pretty sure there is a small pin that runs through the down tube and connects the two. Shouldn't be too expensive of a repair either.

I was thinking there is a screw in there like Cdale, and trek use.
Mavic did you take either shifter off and look for a screw down inside it?
I agree if your happy with the bike invest in a quality pro repair.
Bristers may be a bad idea uless you want to stay with the Sora 7speed level. Plus you would need new derailleurs, chain and freewheel. It might also be difficult to keep a clamp on DT housing stop from slipping down the tube.

I inspect the shifter that fell of, took it apart. There is a clean break on the back side of the shift lever this is/was epoxied to the down tube. Will inspect right side down tube shifter soon.....to see if it has the "screw" or tightening mechanism to tighten the both sifter levers to the frame w/the epoxcy. Thanks for your help. Please note that there is a clean break of the pin on the shifter that fell off. Not sure if it can be fixed. I'll try to keep you posted.

As I mentioned in the other thread, using clamp-on shifters would be a simple fix.
P.S. .... not sure why you started another thread .... get's a bit confusing to have 2 on the same topic.
IMO you should bugger off the DTs, rivet some cable stops into those little holes that remain, and convert to brifters.
