Since Christmas I have switched to riding road bikes. I have a 2010 Specialized comp 10 speed that makes no noise when I coast. I have a 2011 Specialized triple 10 speed that clicks continous when I stop pedaling. Both are 105 gearing. Why does one bike make noise and the other one doesn't? Is this common for 10 speeds to make noise like this when not pedaling? Thanks in advance!


Yes, it is coming from the rear hub.

Because they have different hubs.

It is the rear hub. Some make a lot more noise than others. Mavic Ksyrum hubs can be noisy, Shimano Dura Ace hubs are fairly quiet. Chris King hubs sound like a fishing reel while Hope Hubs are quiet. Switch rear wheels between the two bikes and the noise will transfer from one bike to the other.

Some freehubs are noisy and some aren't and it's not much related to quality.

If by "noise" you mean the typical fast ticking "ratchet" noise that comes from the the rear hub area when coasting, then all regular road bikes make it. Both of your bikes make it. It is just that one makes louder noise than the other.

At least your bike only makes a clicking sound.
My Schwinn Caliente makes a loud noise AND the chain continues to move while I wait for the light to change.
Had a person ask me how I got the chain to keep going at a stop; he wanted his to do the same.
Told him to just be happy it didn't and rode on.
