loose chainring bolt?

not enough grease on your BB threads, or it could be a chainring bolt. Or it could be coming from your seat and sounding like it's from the BB area.

How is your chain tension? Sounds like it could be too tight or maybe just a tight spot.

thanks for the help. i had checked everything suggested and i'm thinking i might just regrease the bottom bracket just to see what happens. if that doesn't work then i am truely stumped.

Gremlins...thats the only thing I can think of...tiny little fixed gear gremlins.

yeah, if it's not gremlins and if regular grease doesn't work, try some anti-seize compound or a little loctite.

Or it can be chain alignment, that is the most probable cause of your noise.

What kind of metal against metal sound? Is it a rattling? A squeaking? A grinding?

Have had a similar experience ever since adjusting the chain tension. I've been hear/feeling a slight knocking coming from the cranks. Checked out the ring, the chain seems to be in line, but seems a little "off" in one spot...how to correct this?

It sounds like your chainring might be bent. Pull it off and put it on a flat table or a priece of glass or something. If it's bent at all, it will cause a wobbling and there for cause your chainline to be off a bit each revolution.

it sounds like when a bike has a front deraileur and the chain is slightly rubbing against it. i figured chainline was the cause and i checked all that crap right away and it seems fine. i'll just tinker with it and eventually the noise will go away.
