OK guy guys/gals I am new when it becomes to biking. I have recently been doing a weekly bike ride that is about 15-17 miles per ride and looking to upgrade from my Mongoose Snare with semi slick tires. Im looking for a performance hybrid(more like a Flat Bar road bike), something thats fast, but I can still enjoy with the wife at her speed. Light weight. And a budget of $750 give or take could strech it to $1k for something nice. Should I hold out alittle longer for some better deals or discounts? I'm not opposed to a good used(2011 model) one but cannot find anything that I have seen. Im 6' tall. I have visited the LBS everything feels so much better than my current ride its hard to tell which to choose. I ridden the Specialized Sirrus Elite and Giant Rapid. I have looked at the Scott Metrix 40 brand and Fuji Absolute 3.0 as well but need to ride them. But I dont think those are the models I would like though. I guess Im looking for a 9 or 10 speed set-up since i would like it to be fast. I ride with a really mixed group with Box store bike to all out full carbon set-ups but we keep a good easy pace. Throw out some suggestions for me.
Thanks
Chance

I just picked up a Focus Arribe from 02gearshop and I think it was a great value. Purchased it to make an upright trail tour bike, it can mount Front and Rear racks. 3 x 8 geartrain so not exactly what you're looking for, but check it out.
Shipping is free, just kinda slow. Bonus - bike was set up perfectly by Focus before boxing it up, so I was riding in under 30 minutes.

How much does that weight?

I've read online that it goes 24 lbs. I weighed my Medium and got 25, but I had already added a cage, pedals, and swapped the seat.

The Sette Xion is as road bikey as you can get for a flat bar bike. With road bike gearing and 23c tires it really hits a niche market. Very light weight and well spec-ed for the money though.

Fuji Absolute 1.0, Fuji Absolute 2.0, Trek Jamis Coda Comp, Jamis Coda Elite, Jamis Allegro Comp, Jamis Allegro Elite, Cannondale Quick 2 or 3, Trek 7.4 FX and up and a Giant Rapid 1. You can't go wrong with either of these. Just test ride and pick and choose.

I like the Cannondale quick 3! I'm just having trouble trying to find one here to test ride. The Fugi Absolute 1.0 is at the top of my list, as well. But the LBS only stocks the 3.0

Found a 2010 model Cannondale Quick 2 for $475. Looks to be in good condition. Does that price seem like its a good deal?

$475 for the 2010 Quick 2 sounds like a good deal to me. That's less than half what it cost new.
Couldn't find much on the Sette Xion, just this one owner review: http://www.roadbikereview.com/cat/latest-bikes/commuter-bike/sette/xion/prd_456216_6514crx.aspx

That's a great deal. I say go for it! Ops thought it was new. If it's used, make sure that you know what too look for.

Well looks like someone beat me to the punch on the Cannondale Quick2. So I'm back to square one.

These are all good recommendations, with the addition of the Specialized Sirrus you rode. I have a Cannondale Quick 3 and I love it. Almost as much as my CF road bike. That Quick 2 was a great price, too bad you missed it. Just make sure that any used bike is the right size that you need.

It sounds to me that you are looking for pretty much a flat bar road bike. If you are not going to ride in any dirt but are going to bounce around in town a bit BUT you want fast, whatever you get, I'd stay away from bikes fortified (heavy) for dirt and stay with a slickish, 90+ psi, 28c tire. Look for these things in your bike. Tell the LBS you are looking for a hybrid tending strongly to the street. Stay away from bulky suspension bikes. If you live west of the devide, make sure you have either a triple up front of better yet, a compact double crank and at least a 28 big cog in back. Stay under 22 lbs.

GREAT geometry but too much tire and geared to low for what you are looking for. It will climb mountains but it isn't fast.

Somehow I think he's looking at more road lineage.

Fwiw, if you like reading reviews, in the June issue of Bicycling Magazine they selected the Cannondale Quick 4 as best flat bar road bike in their Editors Choice Awards. I think the 1 through 3 models are much nicer and more road-like. A very nimble and lively hybrid. :)

Thats what i'm getting, too. OP is not really looking for a hybrid.
So that begs the question, why a flat bar road bike? Why avoid drop handlebars and brifters?
If a flat bar is absolutely necessary, I'd go for the BD bike listed earlier.
I know you don't want to hear this but the Giant Rapid has a mighty fine city pedigree.

If no dirt is involved, stick some 28Cs on it and it's a taker. How much money?

Hey, this bike may be on sale tomorrow at REI.

Yes I am looking for a flat bar road bike. I just need the more upright riding position since I broke back a few years ago and sometimes my back bothers me. If it didn't I wold go for a drop bar bike.

Giant Defy. http://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-us/bikes/model/defy.5/9014/48856/
This bike is designed with a relaxed posture, less reach to the bars and higher bars. It is fast and will climb. Best bike I've owned.

That's not a hybrid; it's a road bike. The OP wants a hybrid.
I know but he said he wanted a more upright riding position and the defy is as upright as a road bike get's. I just thought the OP might want to look at it. Most of what he discribes is a road bike that is ultra comfortable on the back.

I agree with Igo. A relaxed geometry road bike like the Defy can be as comfortable on the hoods or tops of the bars as any flat bar bike. If OP is not going to mount wider tires, a hybrid is not necessary IMO. And limiting yourself to flat bars really cuts doen the choices of good bikes.
But hey, what do I know? I've only recently purchased a fast hybrid, because I wanted something in-between my aggressive-geometry road bike and one of my full-on MTBs.

I'm buying my first higher end bike. I'm looking for a hybrid/comfort bike. I really want a cruiser for my 4 weeks at the beach, but the rest of the year I live in Westchester County, NY with plenty of hills and lovely bike trails. Help because I am completely torn between the Specialized Crossroad Women's and the Giant Cypress women's. Both ride beautifully. On the Specialized, I like the extra space bet. me and the handle bars, the slightly larger handle bars and slightly wider tires. They cypress has an equally wonderful ride and I prefer the seat and love love love the color. And the price is $50 lower. Can you help please?

My goodness. Maybe you should start your own thread about this. Many will be glad to help.

Does anyone know of a retailer for the Boardman bikes here in the USA? I really like the team hybrid and hybrid pro models!

Looks like you have to buy it mail-order through Wiggle if are in the U.S. and want to get one.
http://www.wiggle.co.uk/?s=Boardman+hybrid
Edit: Hmmm. Wiggle's website is acting screwy. A few minutes ago it showed 4 Boardman hybrids. The Hybrid Pro was out of stock, but the Hybrid Team was available in sizes small and medium. Now I can't get them to come up on the website.
Edit again: Ah, okay. I see. You have to have the international shipping option set to the U.S. to get the Boardmans to show up.

A coworker ordered a bike from Wiggle for his kid; you'll have to pay duty/tax if you purchase a whole bike. I don't remember how much this added to the cost of the bike.

Well I found a deal on a 2010 Trek 7.5fx. It has bottle holders and computer on it already. I could not pass the deal! Now looking to upgrade pedal and maybe tires bc it still has the stock ones on there.
Anyone have some suggestions on some good lightweight tires and tubes?

What did you end up paying for that? I'm in the same situation now trying to find a good deal on a lightly used bike.

Only $400! And it's mint. I search a while though to find it.
