Touring - Any clever uses for a trashed (LHT) frame?

Top and down tube are slightly bent from a run in with an immovable object but otherwise intact. Now that I've rebuilt with a new frame it feels wasteful to throw it away and I don't think my neighbors would appreciate the lawn art! I'm keeping the fork as a truing stand... Would anyone want to repair it? I was too worried about creating new stress concentrations.



And may as well post my first photo of my (rebuilt) ride. Daily commuting 16mi each way (San Jose to Fremont, CA) and soon to set off on my first overnight tour some weekend soon once I get my panniers sorted. I'm adapting Pelican 1495 (briefcase sized) boxes.

Cut the top and down tubes off the seat tube and grind/file smooth, leaving the seat tube and rear triangle. Spread the drop outs wide enough to make a stable trianglular base. Then put a seat and seatpost back in it. Makes a great little shop stool. You may need to grind off the derailuer hanger to level the rear. If you can get a Surly frame decal you can put it on the seat tube if you want to let everyone know what frame it was. I've done a couple over the years, but don't have one now so I can't show you a picture.

That is cool! I just gutted my bathroom; I wish I had room to do something like that.

You could weld it up into a stationary trainer, the front wheel is un needed
as is the fork, if you make a stanchion of 9/8 steel tubing to fit the stem on.
maybe then a platform to put the monitor for a Computer / Wii
sort of trainer role playing game..

I like that stool idea. The Colnago looks really classy!

What came to my mind was to use the headset, a suitably long length of tubing to mount the headtube on, some clear plastic sheet to fill in the frame triangle, and to set it up as a weather vane on the roof.

How do they manage to keep the tires constantly filled?

There would be a couple of ways I would consider. Squirt some expanding foam through the valve hole. Fit those solid bike tyres that are/were available. Even fill them with water (a la rear tyres on tractors).

The stool idea looks a whole lot like a vintage drum throne.

Great ideas! I have a '70 Triumph motorcycle in my living room so the bicycle bathroom would not be out of place... However, I am strongly leaning to the stool idea as it should be easy to do and all I have in the garage currently is a camping tripod stool. I peeled the Surly badge/sticker off the headtube intact so I could easily apply it to the seat tube, and I have a spare seat to boot.

Google turned up a fair number of things for "bicycle furniture" but most of it is arty beyond my capabilities or motivation!

And the spokes would probably rust in a nice hot, humid bathroom.

I'd see about putting couplers on the bent frame.

Keep the rear triangle as a truing stand for rear wheels. But then you'd have two truing stands and that takes up a lot of room. And if you have enough room in your garage to easily store two truing stands, the rest of us will be very jealous.
