Without a picture, $50 sounds OK, not great. Sturmey Archer hubs all have date codes. Womens style 3 speeds tend to sell for less than mens style.

I figure any garage sale bike has been sitting neglected for a while (thats the stage a bike goes through before being declared "garage sale fodder".) As such, they pretty much always require a thorough service: bearings, grease, cables, housings, often tires and tubes. Unless you can do the work yourself, by the time you are done, you would be way upside down on it.

I had a womens style Triumph I picked up. Paint and decals were perfect, color matched original fenders, chrome shiny and bright, totally rust free, and original matching saddle. The cleanest 3 speed I have seen.

I bought one of these a while back for $20. It was a little beat up, but mostly functional. If yours is in good shape and totally functional, I don't think $50 is bad at all.
