Introductions - New here. trying to cycle to get in shape

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Hi, I'm trying to restore my old bike so I can get back into shape. I'm 21 and I really have no motivation to get up and run or workout, but I know that I will get up and ride a bike. Thing is I don't have one of those professional city bikes. I have 2 bikes, a walmart mountain bike that I haven't ridden since 05 (but I can still fit on comfortably), and a Mongoose BMX single speed bike. the walmart bike is a 21 speed that is essentially the same as this http://www.walmart.com/ip/NEXT-Power-X-Men-s-26-Mountain-Bike/17132924 . I need a chain for both bikes, as they are rusted from sitting outside so many years (unless there is a way for me to fix it) and I also need to buy new inner tubes. also is there a way for me to get rust off the gears? the gears only have light rust.

Will these bikes be useful for me to ride in the city? I live in a hilly neighborhood. I was just gonna use them to ride around the block a few times 2 or 3 times a day when I ride, and attack the steep hills. will this help me get a 6-pack? I was also wondering if I started cycling, would my running form improve. one reason why I am not motivated to run is because everyone told me that I run awkwardly when I play basketball. Don't bash me because I'm relatively new to cycling and I have a very very small budget (just enough to cover new bike parts such as chains, inner tubes, and a lock possibly)

Hi, Roku. I'm new here as well, see my introduction after yours.
I don't think riding will either improve your running form or give you a six pack. Having a six pack has as much to do with low body fat as with having toned abs; if they are under a layer of lard you won't see them.
As far as running, you would be better off on a runner's forum or picking up some running magazines to improve your form.
I would suggest that you not let other people's comments influence your activities. However awkward or slow you may be, your still faster and more graceful than the people on the couch!
