Classic and Vintage Bicycles: What's it Worth? Appraisals and Inquiries - Value for my Peugeot PX-10?

Since getting the Triathlon, SWMBO has decreed that bikes must go. I'd like to sell my PX-10 locally, let me know what you think the value is for an asking price, and what you believe it will ultimately sell for.

It's a 64cm frame, Stronglight cranks, shifters/derailleurs are Simplex, Campagnolo Record hubs with Champion rims, Brooks Professional will be replaced with an Ideale. Mafac levers with new gum hoods, with Racer brakes, CST tires.

Selling a bike of this level, locally in a small market like Spokane = hefty discount, perhaps half (or worse) of what you could sell it for nationally.

XXL size makes selling locally even harder (= lowers price even more). Could probably sell just the frameset on ebay for as much or more than you could sell complete bike for.

Really nice bike, it's tough that you have to sell it. I saw one of those sell recently locally for $250. They are listed for much more on ebay.

I'm afraid you might be right. I will try to sell it locally, but shipping the bike for $150 or more would really put a damper on my ability to sell it complete online.

I wonder what you all think would make the frameset more appealing: i.e. including the bottom bracket and headset? The headset and bottom bracket are loose ball Stronglight, messy to sell separately. Plus, I don't really have the tools to disassemble down to the bare frame and fork myself. I would have to take it to an LBS, meaning more money lost there.

I think you need to work on making your shipping price more attractive and sell on ebay. You should be able to fit in a bike box under the fedex ground 130 limit. This should get shipping worse case into the $60 to $70 range.

PX10 prices have come down recently on ebay. You can probably get in the $200's for the frame/fork/headset/BB on ebay. Probably in $400's for the entire bike. But you never know on ebay as a lot comes down to the particular auction.

It looks similar to mine, in size and condition. Shipping was $125, about as much as you suggested. It might just sell...

Although the last bike I shipped went UPS at buyers request, in the past I used FedEx and it runs around $45.

+1 $600-$800 on ebay, $250, maybe $350 locally. In smaller markets, high end bike often represent a better deal for buyers, worst deal for sellers. Takes some packing skill to get a bike that large in a 130 inch box.

It looks like you are right on ebay. I was thinking I keep seeing PX10's in the $400 range, but that must have been on craigslist. I know Force was selling a big one on here and couldn't get it to sell in the mid to high $400 range.

This bike has the fancier Nervex lugs. That will affect price.

Locally, I think I would take around 400$, no less, for your bike. I'd prolly price in the five range. My gut is between four and six on the bay.

There's a point where doing local sale means taking a price hit. Old high end stuff usually falls in this area. However, that doesn't mean you shouldn't try it before moving to the bay with this one.

I think you could get around $400-$500 on CL understand that it may take some patience I have found that on selling nicer vintage stuff selling time varies greatly and could take month or two to sell at a good price. The mistake a lot of people make on bike like this is to start discounting lowering the price to quickly understand someone who buys a bike like this that will pay $300 would also likely pay $400 or even $500. Lowering they price will not likely make the bike sell a lot quicker unless you go under the $300 mark.

Good point, and I agree that lowering the price out of frustration is counter-productive.

So the nice stuff goes without interest. When I bought my Colnago Master Lite, it had been up on C/L (reposted a few times) for over two weeks. After I bought it, seller told me I was the only response he got. Price? $600.....

Here in "Hooterville", high end bikes just don't get much respect.

Well, here in Spokane Metro area, we have about 300,000 potential customers. That Colnago would've sold for closer to $1000 here. We have upscale people in several areas, including N. Idaho next door. Hooterville? Is that where Hooters started? ;)

I bought mine in the Greenville/Spartanburg, SC market, which I think is larger than yours, and can sometimes get action from Charlotte, NC.

Unfortunately, that much would make me too much under water on this restoration. The bike cost me $20 to begin with, then I went to the LBS to get some problems fixed and got more "upgradeitis" going on that I should've. Lesson learned on something you fall in love with...

Here in NorCal/ SF Bay Area, the story is not unlike what you describe.

I keep telling people that once you are willing to spend over 250-300
bucks on CL, there is a quantum leap in what you can find for sale
quality wise. $350-650 or $700 buys a lot of classic bike here.

There is a great deal of general ignorance, i think, about what
makes a high end bike, and the crappy Peugeot and "Chicago
made" Schwinn thing is in full flower here on CL.

The poor guys who have stuff like your Colnago are stuck with a
shrinking pool of potential buyers, because everyone with money
and an interest in a "fast" bike goes over to Mike's Bikes, or
Performance, or even City Bikes here and plops down three
to five big ones on the latest CF wunderbike.

It sucks the money out of the used bikes for the cognoscenti
market very quickly.

Around here, I see nice PX-10's for $300 - 500 pretty regularly,
which is why I have so damn many of them ( four currently :o).

I'm not sure how guys ever get the money back on restorations.
I'm riding around on a PX-10 that I got for 200 bucks (250?) that
has a yellow Cycle art paint job and gold decals that must have cost
$350-400 minimum (the paint and decals.)
