So my old commuter which was slowly dying is now officially dead. The propigating crack in the bb mouting was spreading noticably daily and it was only a matter of time before it failed. So I took it to my favorite LBS and the owner took one look at the crack and pointed at the dumpster. A sad day, that bike has been with me as long as my eldest daughter has been around. But, given that it wasn't much of bike to start with and all the parts to make it a good commuter/beater/shopping trolley/kid carrier are quite new and transferable I think its spirit will be reincarnated into the new bike.
I found a new replacement for a stunning $230. Not great, but not junk either given I got a discount from $300. It also has the advantage that it doesn't look nearly as pretty as my mtb toy (which would last all of an hour in the places I have to lock it up at work)
Rust in peace my old friend....
