"WALKER, Mich.—

More than 60 Kenowa Hills High School seniors were suspended for their last day of school Tuesday for a senior prank in which they rode their bicycles to school.

The students had a police escort along the way, and several students reported to FOX 17 that the Mayor of Walker was out along the route handing out donuts to kids as they passed.

Some commuters and teachers were not amused, however, and reported that the kids caused them to be late for work.

The students will be allowed to participate in graduation ceremonies."

I think the mayor trumps the school administration. Let the kids ride.

I've been a teacher for 17 years, and I say that this is a mega-stupid decision. It's a matter of traffic code, not school discipline code. The school district is out of its jurisdiction here. If a student were holding up school traffic by doing donuts in the street in an automobile a block from the school, everybody would have expected the police to handle it - NOT any school administrator. If these students were riding in a manner inconsistent with traffic code, then they should have been cited by the police (except for that little police escort thing, which sort of flushes this point, I suppose). This is nothing more than a "gotcha back - no tagbacks" from the school administration, given that these kids are graduating and that the admin knows they won't be around to seek revenge for it. Quite pitiful and disappointing coming from the supposed adults in the situation, I say.

Just means they get some time to not go to school. I got suspended once and they couldn't give me a straight answer why. It was only 3 days but I still don't know why.

I'm a traffic engineer, and the school administration is so far off base, it's not even funny.

I don't see what the big deal is, everyone knows bikes belong on the sidewalk and runners belong in the road/bike lanes.

I would much rather share the road with cars than runners. I've had far more luck with car drivers giving me room and sharing to road than runners who refuse to budge. They just don't get the concept that run towards traffic so they can see it coming and get out of the way since it is far easier for them to simply step off the road than for someone else to swerve into on coming traffic.

I, too, thought this would be about old people. In terms of "pranks" you hear about, this is pretty mild, no? At least they didn't deface school property or abuse animals or other people or anything.

The senior "prank" was as innocuous and positive as riding bikes to school, and they get suspended for it? That principal is SO getting their car dismantled and rebuilt inside their office and/or rectum.

I'll even loan them tools.

Best I can tell, tying up traffic and making the principle and some teachers late for school.

Sounds like poor planning on the faculties part, but in America today, it's always someone elses fault.

Due to the crown of a road (highest at the center for drainage), running towards traffic all the time means that the right foot would land slightly higher than the left. This can have a negative effect on the body. Alternating sides can offset that. Granted you wouldn't see the traffic while running on the other side of the road. Gotta make tradeoffs.
