Bicycle Mechanics - Shifters for internally geared hub?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I'm converting a 6-speed derailer (folding bike) (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php/815963-Converting-Dahon-6-speed-to-internal-gear-hub-with-coaster-brake) to a 7-speed Nexus IGH (SG-7C18). One thing I'm not clear about is: do IGHs work with any typical indexed shifter?

My Nexus came with a twist grip which is fine for my usage. I'm just asking because I'm confused on this topic. I looked at Sturmey Archer, SRAM, etc. before choosing the Nexus. It seemed like all the manufacturers listed shifters specifically for their IGH hubs. That caused me to think IGH shifters are different. But, the Nexus twist shifter feels like it's indexed the same as any twist shifter.

Thanks.

As far as I know, all IGHs only work with shifters designed for them. The cable pull is different for each one, broadly speaking.

The Nexus twist shifter IS indexed, with a series of clicks like any indexed shifter but the amount of cable pulled by each click is specific to that particular hub's requirements.

There are some alternative shifter options out there:

Edit: looks like the Versa one only works with Nexus 8.

Looking at the Web sites, both of those vendors have shifters which are specific to each hub manufacturer/type.

Now if you went with a Sturmey Archer Hub,
they make 3 different shifters for their stuff.
bar end , thumb and rotary grip.
3 & 5 speed ..
their 8 is needing more changes, like the cranks on the bike..
because the hub is not using any reduction gears, .. 1:1 is the low.
