Folding Bikes - Questions about 1972 Peugeot DA 40 E

I found a couple of 40-year-old French Peugeot relics from 1972.

They BOTH have the scathingly brilliant French 36-spoke Rigida rims equipped with "Fichtel & Sachs Duomatic Torpedo" hubs with the kick-back gear selection.
The blue one is cleaned up & I'll start on the copper-coloured one tomorrow.

Is there any interest for this type of stuff among Peugeot collectors ??

Any idea of the possible monetary value of these things ??

Thanks !! Its funny that so much stuff gets bought and then simply not used.

I will try to flog them on the Toronto market to see if anyone wants one or both.

The kickback Duomatic takes a bit of "getting used to" but both bikes ride really nicely.

What I really don't want is for some mope to buy one of these bikes in order to remove the rear 36-spoke Fictel & Sachs Torpedo & throw the rest of the bike away.

I'm almost sure thats whats going to happen .....if it had a 28 spoke rear wheel[ISO406] like mine it might not

I have a common white one with the duomatic that I acquired years ago the chap that I got it from didn't even know it had a duomatic until I explained [after i paid money for it] and he was amazed and always wondered why sometimes it was easy to pedal and sometimes its not[going uphill on the same hill]

when I walked away with the bike he had this regret look in his face ....I drove off in a hurry lol

I know which bike models have the f&s duo installed so i'm constantly searching local CL and ebay auto search and have about a half dozen duomatics in my stable I sold all the automatic hubs i have i just can't get used to them for some reason


btw i've never seen one in such pristine condition that should be a keeper

There has been a few of these bikes that have gone for high prices on ebay. Look at completed auctions. I've seen them go for 300 plus in nice condition. Your two, shooting from the hip would go for 100 - 200 dollars. If you put them on ebay I'd definitely be interested.

Unfortunately, I am in Canada and most of the serious collectors that cruise eBay are Americans. Even though these bikes come apart, shipping internationally would be a huge part of the price. I'll dump them on the local (Ontario, Canada) market to see what they bring...

Those are nice, I have only seen one in person and that was in the Boston, MA area of all places. I have several folders and the closest I have seen in quality to those, other than a Raleigh Twenty is an Atala that I picked up. Not nearly as nice a condition though.

If we were closer and had the funds I would definitely be interested. Also my bride is on my case to whittle the collection/accumulation down :innocent: Current count is over 30 bikes total with about a third of those being folders. :D

I managed to give away the gold-coloured one but the blue one is still hanging around. The trick with collecting bikes is to have so many that you can confuse the boss... and then store them all over the house!

There are two Peugeot listed on Winnipeg kijiji, I think both are 5-speed. One of them has been listed for ages. I don't know why no one wants it. These old folders are probably quite heavy and not convenient to carry it on the rapid transit. I bought a new aluminum folder (20" wheels) earlier this year in Taiwan for $85; it weighs 10 Kg and is suitable for mixed transportation.
