Foo - Bruno Mars "Young, Wild and Free"...the slacker song

Just some friendly advice to the youngsters who are finding the job market unfriendly.

Ok, just thought I'd post this as I recently attended the Cal St Northridge graduation yesterday and was completely unimpressed with MANY graduates who will soon be looking for work. A lot of it boils down to low expectations and popular entertainment such as the Bruno Mars song "Young, Wild and Free". The message of the song is that when you are young you are SUPPOSED to be wild, dumb, immature, a drug user and lazy. That might work if you are a famous musician, but for the 99.9999% of young adults out there you will find the job market highly competitive and if you believe you are supposed to be wild you will find employment difficult at best. That song just rubs me the wrong way because a lot of young adults seem to believe that "that's how it's supposed to be", as the song states. It's all fine and fun until reality hits you in the face that you have no money, no job, and no prospects because you prefer drugs, hanging with your homies, and going to clubs all night.

Yes, it's a song. I get it. My point is there are a lot of young adults out there who actually do think this is how it's supposed to be and wonder why they can't find work. It's not just the song either. Pretty much every form of media targeted at that age group is sending the message that you are supposed to be irresponsible, wild and unaccountable. All I'm doing is trying to give a little career advice to people who might be looking for a job.

Well, if your life revolves around going to parties and getting stoned, you probably don't want me in your posse. Just trying to pass along a little adult advice to anyone trying to begin a career.

Unfortunately, wild and free doesn't pay the bills.

I'm not trying to be an old grouch. If you prefer the wild and free lifestyle, that's fine. My point is that it is a tough job market right now. The unemployment rate for young adults is extremely high. If you aren't serious about work, you will probably bounce from unemployment to minimum wage earner your whole life. There is just too much competition out there. At some point you are expected to grow up, put away childish things, and be a responsible adult.

I see what you're saying.. but the kids who actually take advise from rap songs probably deserve to be poor/homless if they're that ignorant. The ones with a good head on their shoulders understand it's just a song to jam out to and shake the boo-tay. Don't sweat the small stuff man..
