Bicycle Mechanics - Max Tire Width in Old 10-Speed Frame

Hey Fellow BF MEmbers!! I hope you all have been able to enjoy the nice summer weather by zipping around on some lightweight and interesting old bikes!

I have a question about old 10 speeds that have been converted to 700C.
I have my bike - the CCM Torino 76 - shown here (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php/734369-CCM-Torino-76?highlight=torino+76), and I recently cut the back tire on km 32 of a 33 km loop ride. I bought a new tire, which I love and think it the most beautiful tire in all creation. But it is a little wider then I expected. It is a Kenda KwickRoller EZ Ride in 700X38 c. I can return it. I have the tire on the rim now my bike is outside and I am wondering what you all think the odds are that it will fit. Keep in mind this is a 27->700 conversions so there is quite a bike of space.

What is the widest tire that can fit in the average old 10-speed that has been converted to 700C wheels? Whats the widest each of you have ever used in such a bike?

As long as nothings rubbing and the tire isn't to wide for your inner rim width it should be fine, I believe it's something like twice the rims inner width for max tire width...so a 14mm rim can handle a 28 tire without problems.

I think you are right about the width of the tire on the rim - it will most likely work well - I have a 19 mm inside width rim. My main concern, though, is the fit of the tire between the chainstays and fork blades.

Since you already have the tire mounted on the rim what have you got to lose by putting it onto the bike? If nothing rubs and the tire brake pads can be adjusted to clear the rim you should be golden.

For a 19 mm rim 25 to 28c tyre is fit for it. So you can use it.

Why not just try it?

You might have trouble with the fenders, but IME the more generous frames can fit 700x40 tires if you're lucky. Others may be closer to 35mm max.

He's asking about a 38c, not a 28c.

I don't know why he doesn't try it instead of asking us.

I was wondering what sizes were likely to work. I had installed the tire on the front rim, and planned to install the lightly worn tire from the front onto the rear. But getting the rear wheel off is more tricky (IGH) so I was wondering what sizes others had put on similar conversions. Fastjake answered that for me.

Anyhoo, I eventually did take the back wheel off and place the front wheel with new tire approximatelyt where it would be mounted in the rear of the bikeand there seems to be clearance for the frame, frnder, and brakes. I will most likely go get another of these tires when I wear out the one I took off the front.
