ok this was years upon years ago, while having a christmas party at my parents house (I think I was 10 at the time) ESPN had this documentary on, and it was about bike messengers. I don't quite remember if it was only about one city, or what it's scope was exactly. But I do remember there was a completely insane messenger on there who wore what could best be described as armor he found in the dumpster after they filmed mad max, and at some point in the doc, he was on a pay phone (yep, back in the days of pagers and pay phones), and he starts screaming into the phone about something, then procede's to smash the hand set into the phone, I don't remember if it broke into peices, but it's a good guess that it no longer worked...

anywho, I've been wanting to see this again for years, so if anyone knows where I could find it, or has a copy please let me know (I'm willing to pay for a vhs copy).

thanks!

trying to contact someone at ESPN might be worth a shot to see if you could get a copy of it.

Are you sure it was ESPN? I seem to remember the same thing, but I always thought it was on PBS. I could be wrong. The guy was like... wearing a catcher's mask and pads type thing, right?

Hmm - a quick search of PBS brought up this : http://www.pbs.org/livelyhood/workday/trenches/initialcontest.html

Second story is about ACME Bike Messengers in San Fran - I don't know how old the page is. Anyone got info on this company?

The Cinecycle documentary looks sick. That pile-up at the velodrome was brutal!

The guys with the body armor/hockey gear/etc... were the X-Men, famous for skitching trucks up the FDR and so on. As far as I know they are all gone now. There was a documentary from the early to mid nineties that had a lot on those guys, I can't think of what the hell it was called though, very cool film. They showed it at the bike messenger film festival a few months back, maybe you could contact someone from the nybma to find out the title.

I seem to recall I spotted a messenger once downtown here coming at me in DH body armor. I got out of the way. ;)

I don't know if it is but I just ordered one, I need some more stuff to watch on the trainer. Right now my trainer sessions are a rotation of American Flyers, Breaking Away, Quicksilver, and assorted BMX videos.

Holy ****, that's it. I never would have remembered the name but from the amazon description that's definitely it... It was definitely filmed before 2000 though, even if you aren't familiar with nyc or the messenger scene you'll know. Not a lot of track bikes, except Vicki, but a really cool film nonetheless. Anyone who has ever worked for mother's should rent it for the steve the greek footage, way too funny.
