I've seen a few posts where people refer to the road forum as the "41". I don't get it. What the heck does it mean?

Look at the URL when you click on that forum.

If you look in your browser window, you'll see that each forum has a numerical identifier. Clydesdales and Athenas is php/248. Road cycling is php/41. Road bike racing is php/33. Hence "the 41" and "the 33".

I was too afraid to ask, but I certainly thought the answer would be something more involved than that.

You haven't been here very long. There is nothing involved or sophisticated about the 41.

The 41 is a magical place where up is down and down is up or not. Where average speeds for recovery rides are stated in parcecs, each person is faster than each other person, and each brand of bike sucks because. It's like Wonderland, except in the 41 Alice would be considered fat.

"when I use a word" Humpty Dumpty said, in rather a scornful tone, "it means just what I choose it to mean - neither more nor less".

Very much like Wonderland, when one thinks about it...

That's just flat "hidden" discrimination!
How come us fat folks get "248" and the skinny racer types get "41" and "33"

</humour> */

Well I certainly wasn't going to ask in the "41" forum! I always feel like a bucket of chum in a pool full of sharks in there!

I find one's personality expresses itself differently depending on the environment. I generally post in the 41 only if I'm feeling carnivorous.

That clears things up for this noob, too. I'll keep my 11.4 mph average speed over here.

Don't worry, you're still faster than many of the 41 guys who post average speeds of 16mph. Sometimes I think some of them have left their bike computers set on kph instead of mph (yes we've found some posers who have). Others just take a two-minute snapshot of their average speed on a ride.

I figure that if I'm pushing 13mph w/40 pound MTB and my 195 pound body, momentum alone would flatten them. Or mass might suck them into my orbit. I could GAF about their speeds. Besides, I'm 57.

I just love that. It says it all. Especially the bit about fat Alice.

The 41 is like Topper from Dilbert; it's not even worth the effort. Here, if you talk about some small accomplishment people tend to cheer you on, there they just "Topper" you.
At this point, until one of them blows past me chugging up a hill (around here it's all hills) they're just the bike version of an "internet tough guy".

Geez, slow down. You don't want to get wind burn.:p I myself keep it a bit slower than you due to the fact that I'm carrying extra weight equivalent to a buxom 25 year old around with me when I ride.

Thanks! I accidentally set mine to kph for a bit, and wondered how the hell I was averaging 18 with a top speed of 36!

I'm still doing only gentle hills after 3 weeks back on a bike, and no more than 5 or 6 miles at a time. That, and I'm only carrying around the equivalent of about a nine-year-old child as extra weight.

Not worth the effort? The crap you get in the 41 is what makes it so enjoyable!!!

Actually, I think the "8" is more like Wonderland. I mean, how else can you explain a thread where the OP is asking for suggestions to keep a car from passing him in a no passing zone when the road is empty?

The "41" reminds me more of the big brawl scene near the end of Blazing Saddles.
