Bicycle Mechanics - Mavic Equipe hub, how tight should "expansible bearing support" be

I needed to change a freehub body on my 2010 Ksyrium Equipe, and in the process the axel had to be removed and remounted.

The relevant Mavic manual includes this step:
...
4) Tighten expansible bearing support ... until it's in contact with the bearing, and the loosen it one half turn.
...

Well, when I do loosen it half a turn after contact the axel ends up with free play. However if I keep it tight at or beyond contact with the bearing there will be increasing friction (discovered this when I first did a wrong install by tightening it somewhat hard, which led to noticeable friction)

What's the right thing to do here?

Ah, nevermind. When I actually screw the fork support nut (term?) and tighten it as suggested (20nm) the free play seems to go away, although haven't tested mounting on the bike. So "loosen one half turn" it is...
