Hi all,
Im flying from the UK to San Francisco in June for a conference and thought it would be good to extend my visit to the states with some cycle touring!

Planning on doing the San Francisco to LA route. Would anyone like to join me? I won't be the fastest rider, but should be able to manage a reasonable pace.

Also, can anyone recommend a good cheap bike shop to buy a used bike suitable for touring in San Francisco/Berkley? I'm going to have to abandon my bike at the end of the tour when I leave for the UK so don't want to spend much.

Cheers.

Could look for a used bike when you arrive, may be able to get something better for less money.
You can also buy a touring bike from BikesDirect.com and ship it to where you'll be so you can just assemble and ride for less money. Spend all the rest of the money in the bike shop for the essentials.

I sold a used Bianchi to a guy from the UK who did the same thing. Route will be important as will visibility. Not sure of the comparison but drivers here may be less courteous than in the UK.

Feel free to abandon the bike at my house when you're in the LA area. ;)

Thanks for the good advice! Ive just checked out bikesdirect and some of their racers seem very reasonably priced.

Cheers :)
