I would like to stick with 8 speed, but find replacement in kind difficult to find. I read that pre 2001 9 speed will work. How can one identify a pre 2001 Record or Chorus 9 speed rear derailleur?

The difference between all pre 2001, and post 2001 Campy RDs is the existence of a "B" screw on the upper body. The newer ones have a spring inside the upper body and set the angle by adjusting the tension on the idler cage spring to balance against the upper spring.
One thing you should know is that when Campy changed the design, they changed the cam for 9s to work with the different RD, but told service techs that the difference was slight enough that it wouldn't be noticed with 8s systems. My experience as the east coast tech bore that out, and many 8s owners reported no issues when changing to post 2001 RDs.
I doubt you'll find a pre-2001 RD that easily, except maybe well used, but there are still 9s newer RDs to be had and that should work fine.
