My friend's mid-80's Peugeot PH501 downtube shifter "braze-on" decided to pop off today...luckily not while riding. I'd like to take care of it, considering I sold him the bike when it didn't fit me.
I'm trying to figure out how this braze-on was attached--glued, riveted, brazed, soldered, etc. I can't tell if the little pin is a rivet or part of a rod that runs through the DT to hold the posts in place while the adhesive sets. The shifters are Sachs-Huret...I'll have to disassemble them to figure out if it's the oldschool Huret-specific kind or Campy/Simplex-style. Don't know my Huret history. I have access to industrial epoxy, a local framebuilder ($$$) that'll braze stuff on, a hacksaw, and clamp-on shifters. I've also seen unmodified Huret DT clamps on eBay for about $5.
Any suggestions on what combination of the above would be the best compromise of money & function? Aesthetically, he'd prefer not to have a clamp, but it's not a dealbreaker. Apologies for the poor pictures. Thanks!
