As some of you may realise- It is 60 years since the Queen- Queen Elizabeth ll- Came to the throne. Britain closes down for the next 4 days with various celebrations being held to mark the occasion. The weekend of Saturday and Sunday is being extended on Monday- because that is a Bank holiday and Tuesday as as that is the anniversary of the accession. So it could be difficult to do business with the UK next week as a lot of people will be taking the rest of the week off aswell. Just a heads up if any of you do business over here.

But 4 days off and what am I going to do with those extra days off work:rolleyes: Bit of gardening- bit of shopping and a bit of watching the TV to view the celebrations.

So The next 4 days are something special over here in the UK. BUT what about the rest of you? I propose that there be an unofficial PIE Ride. I say unofficial as the official one is not due till September--But that is a long time away. Usual rules apply- A ride of 15 miles for the experienced amongst us and a shorter ride for the newcomers. Only criteria being that Pie has to be had on the ride. Even if you do not wish to join the UK in the celebration- then you will be able to find another reason for Pie.

So I have 4 days to get a ride in- most of you only have two so work out the route- find the cafe for the break and join me in my celebration of an UNOFFICIAL PIE RIDE.

Living in Canada, I'm surprised that the League of Monarchist Cyclists hasn't planned a 60-Imperial-Mile Tea Ride for next Tuesday to celebrate the occasion. Pie with tea would be appropriate for the occasion. Righto, time to get cracking!

My first memory is someone walking up to my mother in the street in Manchester and saying "the King is dead". I remember a family celebration that took place for the Coronation the following year - and I still have the glass Coronation mug I was given that day. I think I rode my first 3-wheeler a year or two after that!

No pics but I was Living in London aged 5 on coronation day and a big street party for the kids in the road. Lots of fundraising had been done to provide liquid refreshment for the adults and Prizes for the Fancy dress for the kids. I won the Fancy dress as Robin Hood dressed all in green- except for Brown boots. My mother took months making the costume and I was under strict orders not to let anyone know what I was going as.

Highlight for me was the Ice Cream man coming round in his Trike and giving all the Kids a free Ice cream.

You have just hit on one of the best "Savoury" pies it is possible to have- but it has to be accompanied with Mashed Potatoes- Cabbage and Spotted Dick for dessert. Not the ideal combination for a bike ride.---Especially the spotted Dick.

Here, here, God Save The Queen. I was wondering if you would post on this when I watched today's Diamond Jubilee special on CNN this morning. They are having fairly good coverage that I'll watch on-line at work Monday (ought to be holiday here in the colonies, too.) I have tremendous respect for Her Majesty, Elizabeth Regina.

Was only 5 but if you saw the pageantry that went along with the Coronation- You would realise why it took so long. All the Training to be done and all the ritual to be abided by. Nothing like the old days when you killed the current king in battle and put on the crown and you were king. And from the time George VI died- Elizabeth was queen- she just had not had the ceremony.

My favourite royal memory is from when I was working in a town in Yorkshire. The Queen's motorcade was due to pass our office on the way to some event and my colleagues, being Yorkshiremen, took bets on when Her Royal Highness's Rolls Royce would pass a particular lamp post. When the procession came by none of them were waving - their eyes were fixed on their watches to see who had won!

Her purse has a solar panel that enables her to perpetually give the "royal wave." He knew I'd love it because I collect royal memorabilia, (own a plate from Victoria's Jubilee). He works for the British Consulate in NYC. Last night they hosted "The Great British Run." Participants were meant to come in a costume that related to something British. The Consulate shared photos on their Facebook page. Looked like fun!

What a coincidence! Just this afternoon I said to my husband that I haven't made an apple pie in a long time and maybe I'll make one Sunday, and here you are proposing a pie ride! So, the pie end of the deal is set, but we are due to have a very rainy week, but the ride part may not happen. But, I'll still eat the pie in celebration of the Queens Jubilee .

I've just been searching, without success, for my favorite photo of Elizabeth as a very young woman and as an ambulance driver in the middle of the blitz. The photo, as I remember it, is a street scene with rubble in the background and the ambulance also in the frame. A very powerful indication British commitment to the effort, an effort shared by all.

Lamprey Pie is the official pie (I'll pass, thank you). I have made Spotted Dog (spotted dick). Its a steamed suet pudding with raisins. Its actually pretty good with a brandy sauce.

Spotted Dick---A pudding that has gone out of fashion due to to the "Unhealthy" ingredients involved. It is a suet pastry--Pastry made with a lot of cow fat-- and mixed into it are the dried fruit. The traditional way was to then roll it into a fat Sausage shape and wrap it in amuslin cloth- or cotton tea towel and boil for a good few hours. Good easy pudding to make and the only taste that came from it was the custard that went over the top as the pastry was a bit bland. Various other pudding were made that were better than this such as Treacle- Stronger tasting fruits and the pride of the lot was a savoury one that was made of Bacon and Onions.

It can be made with a better tasting Pastry that is more like a heavy sponge but that added cost and time to the making of it but as a Youngster just after the war and the austerity that came with it-This type of pudding was a treat. Full of nutrition that was lacking in the diet of the time amd was beautiful.

And Lamprey is a fish that has almost disappeared from the English rivers. Lamprey pie is a delicacy and apparantly the Lampreys involved are imported from America- as you have a surplus over there.

Lamprey Pie may be the official pie but I bought a blueberry pie last night while getting the weeks groceries. I'll bake it today and have a slice in Her Majesty's honor. God Save The Queen. Might even break down and have a scoop of vanilla ice cream on the pie while it is still hot. It is the Queen's Diamond Jubilee after all.

Watched the salute to the Queen on the Thames before I rode yesterday. The Royal Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Chamber Choir were fantastic. HRH prince Phillip, HRH Prince Charles, HRH Prince William and HRH Harry all looked so proud of Her Majesty. When the played "God Save the Queen" they all were singing along. Made the hairs on my neck stand up.

Oh, bicycle content, I hummed "Rule Britannia" the whole time I rode and "God Save the Queen " while I enjoyed my blueberry pie. All in all a good day. BBC America had a full day of specials about the Queen and the family. William and Harry impress me as two well grounded young men and are serving Her Majesty well in the Royal Air Force and Royal Army.

All the pageantry and honours have been great to watch. I hated to hear that Prince Phillip was in hospital with a bladder infection. Hope his recovery is complete and that he is comfortable. Prince Charles' salute to him was inspiring to listen to, found my self saying Hurray!!! to the Hip-hip, to myself. I actually hate for everything to end today. Being at St Paul's Cathedral for the Archbishop of Canterbury's homily would be grand, too. God Save the Queen!

No disrespect, but I just don't get it.

Part of the pageantry that we have had for many years--In fact centuries. I know that "Some" look on royalty as a waste of time and money but for the vast majority of British- and I include the commonwealth in that- The Royal family are revered and respected. It is part of our culture and the past 4 days of celebrations have shown that.

I can respect others "Not getting it" as we are not all the same. But for me- Although I could not get to any of the events- it has shown what Great Britain is all about. Not many places in the world where you can get 1,000 boats in a procession on a river that was so well arranged and co-ordinated that the Spectacle that it created was well worth viewing. The concert last night and not many places where you can get 4 hours of entertainment from top artists for free---And that jubilee song "Sing" Artists from all over the commonwealth and not by professionals. It is fantastic and there was a programme on TV about the making of it. To then see all of the artists from Australia- Africa-Jamaica and many others on stage performing live just made the concert worthwhile. Pity they had to have "some" of the "Icons" of British music there but some of them are well past putting on a good performance. When you get to 65+ things start to go downhill.

Final Event has just finished and is going to be an event that many are going to remember for many years.

As I say- it is part of our culture and we are part of it. There are a few around that are against it but I should thing they are keeping their heads down for the time being. But I do respect others views- unless they are so anti- that they will not accept others views. That is when I will get venomous and you would know about it.

And those big guys in shades--Not part of our culture again. But the Queen is protected. Just that you do not have to be BIG and be conspicuous by wearing dark glasses and a big bulge on one side of the chest to be able to protect someone. One of my mates was at the Thames procession and he said that along the route there were a few Rooftops with shelters on them. People dressed in Black or Camo were seen around them. And in the crowd where he was about every 30 yards was a Person not looking at the pageant- they were scanning the crowd around them all the time. And the CTV cameras were scanning all the time--Or at least they were on the move all the time as with our cutbacks- half of them are probably no longer operational- but can you tell which one is a dummy?

Steak and Kidney has been ruled out on this forum as it is not suitable for Pie Rides. That and the fact that not many like kidney.

But at one point I worked at a meat packing factory. The wife made Steak and kidney from Sirloin Steak and Pigs Kidney. The best combination for such a Pie but "Filet de Boeuf en Croute" is a good substitute. Filet of beef cooked in pastry is what it is. Problem with filet is that is has very little taste and you have to put flavour in. But if you want flavour in any meat dish- then Guinness or Ale is a good way to add it.
