I don't get it

It's not a pure sprint event. They are on the track for what, 40 laps in a points race?, so the deep drop stem and bars of a pure sprint setup would be a bit of a struggle.

Edited to add: Plus they're not posengers trying to impress the messers at the local coffee shop.

are those men or women? the first rider appears to be male, but the second appears to be female. the rest i can't tell because my crappy monitor doesn't get bright enough.

Points racers will use road bars because there is no need for special steel "track" bars. These men and women aren't going to need the extra stiffness like pure track sprinters do. So, why use heavy steel when you can use nice light carbon fiber or aluminum? Also, since the points race is so long, the road bars are comfortable.

I was/am a pursuit rider. I started using road bars with track characteristics like the Cinelli 65 Crits bars. You need wider bars for endurance races ( Madison,Points,Pursuit) in track to help you BREATH !

A long time ago I remember using my old track stem (Cinelli Deep Drop ) with my Cinelli crits ,it was ok for awhile but when you are looking for comfort it not there so I went to my road bike and pulled out my stem.

I have just recently started to go back to Deep drop stems just for old time sake but not to race endurance with. Maybe sprints and keirin races but that is the limit.

I changed my set up alot and tested them during my days a NYC messenger.

1 They're what the institute gave them,

2 They don't know any better,

3 Track bars come in limited sizes,

4 Maybe a better hold when slinging in a MADISON.

All of the above or take your pick
