Fifty Plus (50+) - I do better at night than in the morning

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I seem to do better on my ride when I ride after work, around 5 or 6 pm, than I do in the morning between 6:30 and 8 am. I'm thinking it's because I am warmed up after a day of work while in the morning my muscles are still cold.

What say you?

Just the opposite. But, I have always been a morning person. I have never used an alarm clock in my life. Differences amongst us humans are most interesting!! I read an article recently that says we humans normally should go to sleep about midnight and awaken about 8 am. That would never work for me.

Its your cercadian rhythm, and its different for most people. Your body gets used to a certain schedule and responds accordingly, aka falling asleep at approximately the same time every night, waking up at approx the same time every morning. Athletes pay close attention to there CR especially when there "time for performance" is at a consistant time of the day.

I saw a rash of "furly rides" on Strava. I had to ask.

A bit presumptuous, aren't you? Maybe he IS a spelling teacher.

Is it my imagination or is everyone around here a bit shagged out from long rides yesterday?

Mornings are not a good time for me to exercise either. I did a 8:00 am group ride once and spent the first hour just waking up and warming up, struggling all the while, even though I had gotten up at 7:00. Best time for me is noon or early afternoon, with late afternoon or early evening being second best.

Maybe I just can't get moving that early in the morning.

I also do much better in the p.m. than the a.m. If the goal is speed, an afternoon ride is far better. But morning rides have their upside as well. A short a.m. ride is agreat way to start the day. A long a.m. ride tends to knock me out for the rest of the day, and I have a built in excuse for lounging by the pool instead of doing yard work for the rest of the day. Starting the day with a short ride means that I'm really ready for sleep at bedtime. So it really depends on your goal for the day. But I've never set a PR for speed with a morning ride.

Always been a morning person but NIGHT rides do perk me up. Up at 6AM- in at work by 7- home at 6pm and out on the tandem for a 3 hour training ride. It was great but that was a few years ago. Now after 1 pm and my eyes need resting.

Me too. Anything important I have to do before noon. By about 5:00 PM my body is on "Miller Time". The longer a day goes on without me starting a bike ride, the less likely it is to happen.
