Mountain Biking - trail Lights

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Hey guys, trying to set myself up for a few nights rides,
any thoughts on this light?
http://www.blt-lights.com/xraysl42.htm
I'm pretty limited as to what I can get here in stores (east coast Canada), but I could be convinced to order order stuff online (Canadian only though) if it's alot better. Also budget wise, the light that I linked to is avaliable at my LBS for 130 cdn.
Thanks

Ehh from my experience, I don't think I'd hit a dark trail with only a 10W halogen...that's just me though. I've heard good things about those lights, but have no personal exp. with them.

an hr & 40 mins is jack for runtime... Pwrd and I were out for well over 2 hrs a couple of weeks ago. We both run HID's that have 4 hr runtime and it makes a BIG difference when you're able to see EVERYTHING around you. It definitely inspires a little more confidence

yeah...I would recommend a helmet mounted one if you plan on riding anything with any form of sharp turns, there were some S turns on the the trail we took and I couldn't see jack b/c of my handlebars pointing off into nowhere

10 watts is barely good enough for off road. 15 watts is better. Your run time is pretty short too. I'm in favor of the HID lights for off road as well. You need power and run time.
yeah, I agree with all of you, the HIDs would be my first choice hands down. Unfortunately I just can't spend that much on a kick ass light. I'll see if I can find something with a few more watts, but maybe I should wait till I have some more money.....but then again, that could be awhile. :(

Looks pretty nice but I've never seen anyone using one... It'll save you about $75 over the price of the Z-force NiMH.
hmm...thanks for the link!
I wonder how good it is, paying for what you get and all that.

or you could get the 16 Watt Halogen that's like 90 bucks on performance....it's pretty decent looking, I was going to get it til I got the HID
Even this is 3hrs @ 10watts, 2 hrs @ 16.....and iti's NiMH http://www.performancebike.com/shop/profile.cfm?SKU=19369&subcategory_ID=4320

That does look like an OK light, but if he's from Canada I assume he may be riding in the cold. That may get down to about 1.5 hours or so ?? Maybe that's OK for him.
Getting that into Canada may change the price a lot too.
This is a little off subject, but, I was just wondering. How cold has it been down there lately? I'm up in New England. It sounds like you have been having good riding weather.

The other night we hit the pavement @ midnight and it was a nice 60 degrees. Monday there is a high of 65, which we'll be riding with. It doesn't get below freezing really.
man, it must be nice to be that warm, but I've started some snow rides and those are alot of fun too.......
So many lights are avaliable in the US,it must be nice, it's just a bigger market. I like that 16 watter, but now that I think about it, it's damn cold and 1~2 hrs is just not good. I have the money to buy a HID but it just seems too expensive........hmmmmm.......maybe a late christmas present....to me? :)

I think this is what most people think, good point. It seems like too much money untill you try it.Then it seems worth it.

I race with NiteRider HID lights (http://www.niterider.com/prod_bicycle.html) in 24 hour events and I ski with the same light in the winter when I train skinning up the mountain in the dark and then back down. NiteRider is the official sponsor for AMTRI 24 hour races in the US. Their HID products are spendy but worth every penny if you're really serious about seeing what's coming up on you at speed.

you must be sponsored or something. jesus I don't think I've ever heard anyone push a light so hard

thanks for the review links 2many,
The reviews for the BLT model (digital wireless) were abysmal. Not one had anything good to say about them. I guess that puts them off my list.
I was also reading about the HID's (prolly going to get one now, cost be damned) and teh reviews were saying that they interfere with wireless computers. Do they all do? Not that it's a big deal, but if there is a brand that doesn't I would give it more of a consideration.
Anyway, thanks for the ideas.

From what I know, all HID's will interfere with a wireless computer or HR monitor. The technology is the same in all for them. In fact the bulbs all come from the same place. They have a ballast like a fluorescent light or a transformer, that supply the bulb with very high voltage to create the arc. That creates the interference. The light would have to be well shielded to not interfere. I can't imagine any manufacturer doing that (shielding the light) and increasing the cost and the weight of the light. It's a very competitive market.
also for road bike stuff reviews too....... http://www.roadbikereview.com/defaultcrx.aspx

Go to a 15w light and make sure it's halogen. I suggest putting a handle-bar mounted light on it too. If you turn your head it can be hazardous w/o one of those.
