i just found out today that the frame i'm looking to build up takes a 25.4 post, and i was wondering if anyone had any recommendations of good brands in that size? something silver and somewhat classy is best.

You don't say if it is an ATB or road post that you require. Here's a reasonably priced, silver, 25.4mm, ATB post with a hi-tech (classy?) look. You can always cut an ATB post to size.

If you don't mind the wieght, 25.4 is a size commonly available in chrome plate(since you mentioned vintage). I have seen relatively few aluminum ones in that size(not that they don't exist). It seems anymore 1 inch(25.4) is reserved for the lower quality bikes, since the newer stuff is usually 27.2 or larger.

The Kalloy Uno 374. Aluminum. 350mm. I have one on my Motobecane. Traditional looking and sturdy. Under twenty bucks.

I know this thread is a week old, but I found it on a search. Nashbar also has an ATB 25.4mm seatpost. I'll probably be getting this for my Centurion roadbike.
"All aluminum with an anodized black satin finish. 350mm length. 319g"

I should be able to adjust the saddle up and down with this seatpost, right?

I've got several 25.4mm seatposts. Those are common on beach crusiers.

Check with Lickton Bike on the internet. You might need to call them, but I'll bet they can help.

Is this a joke? Thats the beauty of seatposts. They let you adjust the saddel height in minute increments.

The Thomson Elite post - imo one of the nicest on the market - is made in 25.4 in both black and silver. I just got a silver one a few months ago, and it took a little doing because, while the black is pretty readily available and QBP stocks it, not very many places carry the silver. I had to find a shop that would special order it for me through J&B Importers, and then Thomson drop-shipped it directly to the shop.
25.4mm is the BMX standard. There are lots and LOTS of aluminum posts out there in this size.

I used to have a Campagnolo Nuovo Record seat post in 25.4. They are out there.
There's a NOS Avocet on ebay right now.
