Hello,
I have a bad back and love camping and was thinking how cool it would be to go via mountain bike. Is there a rear rack to support a a large back pack. I don't think a trailer would work in the back country.... your thoughts?

many people have toured on single track with both panniers and bob trailers and even cargo bikes.

You're describing what's often called "Bikepacking," and it's a blast. Racks, panniers and trailers aren't frequently used--instead most bikepackers attach a variety of smaller bags to their frame, handlebars and seatpost. Bad back or good back, riding with a backpack is something you do only once. Try the Touring forums to learn about what peopel do. Also read up on hamock camping. A lot of peopel report that sleeping in a hammock is great for bad backs. Make sure you read about it enough before buying or making one. Much less weight than traveling with a tent also.

I got a rack offa eBay a while back that's seriously stout...it's massive. It was allegedly made by Cannondale, but I haven't found any documentation to prove it. This is it:

It's supposed to be good for fifty pounds, and I don't doubt it. It's all metal, not heavy, but certainly beefy. I haven't been able to test its capabilities yet.
