Hybrid Bicycles - Quick question about new Fuju absolute 2.0

Just got a 2011 fuji absolute 2.0 from performance bike. I'm not a bike guru but I was wondering if this is normal. Near the cassette it says shimano 8 speed but by the gear shifters it says shimano 9 speed. Just curious why these 2 would be different.

Where exactly is near the cassette, the rear derailleur? That does seem odd on a new bike but the rear derailleur will work with 8/9/10 speed interchangeably. The number of speeds would be determined by the shifters and cassette.

Very strange. For a brand new bike off the shelf, I would think it's not normal.
In saying that, I am using a 9 speed deore shifter with a 9 speed cassette, but restricting it to 7 speed. There is a big difference though...my cassette sprockets line up with the shifter. Did you count the number of cogs on the rear?
I have seen lower grade cassettes with 8 speed (megarange) printed on them, but that is on the largest cog. Could be that Fuji uses the large sprocket from a lower grade cassette on a 9 speed cassette, BUT doesn't make sence.

Yeah, count the cogs on the cassette.

All Absolute 2.0 models should have nine!

Ok I misspoke. The 8 speed wording is on the front derailleur not the cassette. I'll count the cogs tomorrow.

Then although aesthetically not pleasing, I'd say you have no problem.
