Just wondering what you guys plan on progressing to after the bmx stuff is over for you.

Road Bike? Mountain bike? recumbent? other?

actually, if you have the time, just post in order of preference what you would move on to next.

Heh, I'm already there.

I made a slow switch to MTB's a while back, and cannot look at 20 inch bikes in a serious manner anymore. NOT that I'm above it or anything, the wheels just look so small now ;) and the bikes feel 'twitchy' to me...

Also got a road single speed (soon to be fixed gear) but I cannot ever picture myself in a recumbant, no way. I'm sure they're cool and all, but they look a little silly to me, and I can't see being able to bunnyhop one at all...

I'm surprised BMX is still going as strong as it is. People are riding street on mtbs, racing 4X or whatever it's called, which is just a bmx track on a mountain side, and the bikes are being made tougher, finally (due to people "growing up" and moving on to the MTB world). I don't see much that's done on BMX bikes that is not being done a MTB, save for peg stuff, but I'm sure that will come around too. For me, the MTB is just more versatile...

Yeah if you bmx guys want to cross over fixed gear would be a great way to do it. I started riding bmx as a kid, then stopped riding for a while, then started mountain biking, then came the road bike, then the fixed gear, and finally a bmx bike again. Believe me when I was in middle school I never thought I'd ride a mountain bike or spend hours on a road bike but hey things change.

But yeah I know that road bikes may not seem cool but trust me try fixed gear, no brakes too if you can handle that.

Nothing at all. I have 5 bikes. 2 full suspension, 1 totally rigid MTB for commuting, 1 MTB "jumping" bike, and a road S/S. I have the bases covered. It can be tough maintaining them all though. Right now, the commuter is in full working order with a studded front tire, and the road SS is in working order. One of the full suspension needs pedals, new cables, and a fork rebuild, and the other is waiting for me Utah...

When I 16-25, I would have never even thought I'd own a road bike, and at that point could not imagine the full suspension bikes. Funny how things change, except I still want a new bike...

I'm 34 - I have no intention of putting my BMX down for another 10-20 years.

Nothing, I've got 5 bikes and will probaly continue to add to the collection; 1 road bike, 1 touring bike, 1 fixed gear, 1 hardtail mountain bike, and 1 bmx bike. I am looking to add a 6th or 7th bike, I have my eyes on a full suspension mtb and I am looking for an old steel hardtail to convert to single speed. I have to say that the BMX and the fixed gear are the most fun though!

hey im only 15(almost 16) right now and i thought the same thing, a couple years ago. when i was like 11 or 12 i was never going to give up bmx, ever
right now i kinda like to do it all though!

I know a 50 year old guy that rides bmx still. he's been doing it for 30 years.

Iv'e got 1 road bike, 2 mountain bikes, 3 2 wheel racing recumbents, and one racing trike. Used to ride bmx up till about age 17. Can't get used to a bmx anymore though. heres a pic of my newest lowracer though. nope you can't bunny hop curbs, but you can do 40mph on the flat.

and these recumbents look so doofy. cant imagine myself on those unless i wear a full helmet

I know it wasn't meant as rude, but it's one of those statements I hear a lot from people that just is rude. Like back when black people were slaves and it was just taken for granted they were stupid and were property.

BMX is not for 'kids'. Kids bikes aren't bmx bikes - they are Wal-Mart bikes and run the range from 12 inch bikes with a coaster brake to 26" wheeled mountain bikes. They aren't serious or anything.

It's like going into the mountain bike forum and asking the same thing:

I enjoy skiing and have put on rollerblades before. I have been around on a mountain bike as well. But, I have a passion for bmx. Progression is what I live every day ON a bmx bike and anything else is a step away from progression. Progression is not a mountain bike, it is not a road bike, or recumbants... Progression is a dump truck turbined into a forward time machine stepped up into a blender - and that's a good 5-10 years away for me.

Once again, I know it wasn't meant as deragatory, but it definitely has an edge to it even if unintentional. :)

I kind of got the same feeling from the question, but figured maybe I've gotten a little touchy in my old age (37 next week). I agree, BMX bikes are not "kids" bikes at all. And it's not something that requires a graduation - a departure point to real life (car culture), or real cycling so to speak.

But, individual interest may change over time - and it was in that spirit that I answered the question.

For example, and first I was only interested in jumping, then I wanted to learn lawnmowers, then I wanted to ride halfpipe, street, ect.. eventually it led me to Mountain Bikes, Commuting, Fixed Gears and so on. I'm still soaking it all in.

I think it's great that you have such passion for BMX, I've not been able to retain that type of focus. But I would never say that somebody needed to grow up and leave the BMX behind. Maybe it takes more of a grown up to appreciate it for what it is. Anyhow, I ramble, so I shall stop - except to say that deep down I'm still a jumper, and at the core, I'm just a rider of bicycles - and without BMX, I proabably wouldn't be riding a bike today...

I never said grow up........... I said progress. Heck I've changed my hobbies probably 3 times in the last 10 years. Lets see. volleyball for 20 years......... snowmobiling for 9 years........... paintball for 3 years..... didn't ride a bike for 8 years. Hey, guys never grow up..........there toys just change. I didn't mean anything rude. Heck, most you guys think recumbents are goofy and I ride one. I don't like half the recumbents on the market myself........there are lots of ugly and slow ones. I'm just into the really fast racing ones. Geez if I hang around here long enough I might even get a bmx bike.

I added a 2005 Bianchi Pista fixed gear track bike to the stable. And I have been LOVING it, but I can't give up the bmx bike. I actually have ridden about 300 miles on the track bike since a week before christmas, and I just got back from busting my ass at the Incline club skate park on the good ole' bmx'r so there is room for both. I am 23 soon to be 24 and plan on riding both styles for a good long time.

I was just agreeing that there seems to be this thing about BMX being a kiddie thing, and that other people (including some riders) expect that people should "grow out of it". Some riders can focus so much on one discipline, that they don't move on to anything else, that's fine, and that's how those disciplines advance. I don't have that focus so much anymore.

My hobbies have only changed twice though; once away from riding to graffiti art, (still employed the use of bicycles though), and then back to riding. But now I'm more opened minded about riding. When I was a die hard street rider/jumper, people on road bike bikes were flat-trackers, and I could never imagine riding, let alone owning one. crazy how it changes. I still think recumbants are kind of goofy, but if I met somebody that road one, I'd try it out just to see how they are...

The next bike I get will probably be Pista, or similar entry level fixie.

Also, never thought I'd be excited about putting fenders ON my bike, as well as
reflectors....

BMX, Road, and Mountain all right now. Eventually I'll add fixed gear, recumbent, penny farthing, etc. (I rode my friend's penny-farthing around town once - everyone stared and it was awesome!)

i,ll be happy if i can still walk after bmx, got so much metal in my body. Been racing since i was 12 im now 34 and rcovering from broken wrist, cant wait to get back on track...............

i think recumbents are goofy because ppl are not used to it. They are so rare. I think for me after bmx is Car or Dirt bike or crotch rocket. Tho they are more dangerous, and cant do as much tricks, but they are faster. I dont think i will ever quit bmx. unless Bush bans it.

Talk about weird looks.When I go street riding or to the skatepark on my SS hardrock MTBike. I get looks like i have bugs crawling out of my ears.BMX,MTB or whatever just push it and have fun.

Ever heard of four cross(4x) or bsx(bike super cross) thats basicly riding a MTB down a downhill bmx track. A lot of pro downhill riders also do bsx at the mtb worlds aswell as DH.

I've done the BMX, the XC, the DH, and the tandem off road. I can't take the discomfort of a road bike anymore, so the last one has been sold off. Progression? I just bought a cruiser to go racing BMX.
