Funny how things in the family history can catch up to you.
I had planned to be gone from Thursday to Monday on a business trip in Long Island. This was a cool trip cause I got to drive and bring the bike. That made me happy!
I left the house Thursday with a little back pain but nothing out of the ordinary. It progressed through the drive to Long Island but I chalked it up to the seat in the car. Took a nice ride on Thursday and went to work all day Friday on my feet selling stuff at a show for Costco. Friday the back pain grew a little more and I noticed it was in the kidneys. I stretched and chilled out.
Saturday I woke up at 5 am to go for a bike ride and while driving to the start location, 10 minutes into the ride, very sharp pains started in the kidneys. I could not sit any longer. I turned the car around to go back to the hotel. I knew something was up and I have only had one experience like that before about a year ago and it was kidney stones.
So I got back to the hotel, looked up a urgent care just to find they did not open until 9 am. I picked those places because, based on last time, I knew they worked. I could go in, get hooked up to an IV and go through about 4 bags in two hours to wash out the stone. But they did not open in time. I needed to be at work at noon.
So I went to the ER.
Long story short, I had to have surgery. They put a stint in my kidneys and I have multiple kidney stones. One stone is too big and I will need to go back to the doc and get it blasted into smaller pieces and then do surgery to remove the stint.
My wife drove all the way to Long Island yesterday to be there. I had a late surgery, around 5 pm and they kept me over night. urine was dark red but has lightened up a little. I still feel pain in the kidneys and abdomen but not nearly as bad as what it was. I could not sit nor stand. So painful.
But what I do not get is the doc told me to drink more water. I drink about a gallon and a half to 2 gallons a day. GRRRRRR.
Doc just did the paperwork at 3 pm and now I am home in jersey. Feels good to be home!

The doc said it is worse then birthing a child.
My advice: Dont get them!

Man, having this happen away from home is a double whammy. I had a kidney stone when I was in law school. I took my Constitutional Law final exam on major pain killers and got the highest grade in the class. :) The stone fortunately passed without incident.
They probably told you to drink more water because what else can they say.
Take care!

When you see your regular doc maybe you can find out what kind of stones you are getting to see if there is something you can do about them.

Hope you are feeling better! I have had those little devils more then once, always seem to pass them. Doctor told me no more ice cream and tea. One or the other not both. He thought that is what was causing them.

Chef,
Glad to hear you are OK (sorta).
Take care of yourself and get rid of those stones...they just weigh you down on the hills!

I had a friend who drank tons of Red Bull and other energy drinks. He would get them all the time. Then he stopped drinking that crap and they went away.
Could be something in your diet?

Kidney stones are another good reason to avoid the high-protein diets that so many recommend nowadays. No idea if that applies in your case, Chef. Get well soon.

Diet, calcium and protiens are most common association. Look at the calcium content of everything.
Damn Chef, that sucks!!! Take care of yourself!
Sorry to hear that, Chef. Take care of yourself, man.

While I understand kidney stones can be quite painful, to tell you the truth this is better than what I expected when I clicked on the thread - I'm at least happy to hear it wasn't an accident.

Wow! I'm sorry to hear that, Isaac! I hope you feel better soon.
I used to be a medic in the USAF and took care of a couple guys who passed stones into a urine filter. We used to look at the stones under a microscope and they are actually crystals. They have very sharp points which is why they are so painful.

I got the same comparison when I had one. To me, it felt like a white hot poker being shoved into my side and twisted around. The pain made me drive heave. And I only had one minor one that passed without a problem. Coincidentally, it struck when I was driving, but to a hike not a bike ride.
Listen to his advice. If you have never had a kidney stone, do not get one.
Get well soon!

Sorry to hear you have to deal with kidney stones.
I've never had any kind of 'stones' in my body (kidney, bladder, gallstones, etc.), although others in my family have. I'm only 35, though - so who knows what the future holds. I have been drinking plenty (maybe a couple gallons a month) of no-sugar-added cranberry juice for the past several years...maybe that has kept me from experiencing this painful problem.

Cranberry juice- Good, and good for you.
I cut out a lot of calcium because I got the hereditary gout,
and the medicines can cause stones, according to my Doc.
Get very well very soon , Chef .
You need to be back on the bike

Went to docs today and scheduled two more surgeries. I asked if he could do them while I am riding my bike. He chuckled (also a cyclist). But he said no. Darn it!
Decided to fill the prescription for oxycodone and just took the first pill. I hate taking pills and I hate side effects. :(
Went to work this morning, worked out in the gym (doc said it was ok) and then went to work in the kitchen. A bad headache started and hot flashes. It was time to pack up the knives and take a sick day.

Might sound stupid but the balance thing is so true. I forgot how much I miss the feeling before and after a ride, especially commuting to work. It is like a drug that gets into your veins and you need and want it everyday.

You've got that right,
and no, it doesn't sound stupid .
Need to keep the balance in your life.
If you don't, you fall over.
