I just bought a Yakima Doubledown hitch rack. I love the rack as far as that goes, but having to remove the bolt to remove it is a pain. I have considered drilling it out and just using a locking pin in it. But wondered if anyone else has done this and if it was as stable. Any input is appreciated.
The purpose of the bolt is to take up play between the receiver and rack to prevent wobbling side to side. Take the bolt out and wobble the rack by hand to get an idea of how much it'd wobble with a just a pin. (The bolt also makes it a little less easy to steal.)
For convenience, I keep a wrench with an appropriate socket and a short extension with the rack. It takes less than 30 sec longer to install or remove than if using just a pin.
