Southern California - Another robbery on SART...again

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I hope the victim is OK and I hope the pricks that robbed him end up in a cell with Bubba real soon.

Hmm was thinking about doing a self supported century with SART this Saturday... probably not in the light of what happened...
Bored, I think if you're through Santa Ana before 1pm you're probably safe. Between 1pm-6pm you're taking minimal additional risk, and after 6pm I'd just steer clear of Santa Ana.
For my regular workouts I just stay north of the Stadiums usually. At least the only thing that'll get me there are serial killers that stalk the homeless.
On weekends I'll go down to the beach if I have time...the traffic on the trail before 1pm is high enough where I feel a bit more safe. At 2pm on a Saturday I've been on the trail in santa ana and not seen anybody in either direction for as far as the eye can see, so anything goes then. Cyclists are allergic to 80 degree temps I think.

Damn.
Ive been hearing about this SART as an awesome place to ride.
I gotta remember not to go there solo.

You know, one thing I noticed when I went though Katella this past Sunday around 6:30 AM was that there was not one homeless person sleeping at that park. Not sure if it was too early and they all get there later for the food, or what? I've never seen it that empty around there.

I gotta remember not to go there solo.It is a nice ride. Boring if you do it very often, but a nice ride if all you want to do is go fast with other people going fast on a nice, clean surface with no stop lights. As others have said, start early (you wanna stay out of the heat anyway), and be vigilant in certain areas.

I've ridden up SART, down SART plenty and rarely worry, but I go pretty early in the day.
Anybody know where to get a sweatproof chest holster with a built in HR monitor? ANT+ compatibility a plus.
Thank goodness all these gun laws are keeping guns out of the hands of the criminals. :D

Are the homeless served food at that park? In Costa Mesa, many of the homeless make they're way to the local food kitchens that early in the morning.

I think they're served food every Sunday afternoon, between 3-6pm.

From the references in the story it appears that happened just south of the propane yard, not too far south of the 22 freeway and after you cross over the footbridge to the east side of the Santa Ana River. You could call it the next block north of where the string of bike thefts were happening a few months ago. Might not be connected to bicycling since it appears the victims weren't on bikes and might have just been in the wrong place at the right time as that's definately gang turf. Either way its sad when anybody has to be a victim.

I only ride it on the weekends mid morning where there is high traffic volume. I don't worry much. Lone riders at off peak times are most at risk.

Open carry of long guns is still legal in California and there are no restrictions on transport of a long gun. Maybe someone could rig a shotgun to their bike and send a little message to predator gangs in the area.

Anybody have a lead on a stem mounted turret of some sort?

well yeah, that's why i said, either way, im out of options since i only have a handgun so it didn't matter whether it was still legal or not to open carry rifles and shotties.

California banned the open carry of handguns in Jan or Feb. As of right now open carry of long guns is still legal but CA politicians have a bill pending to ban that as well.
Transport of long guns is also legal and a few people have done it while riding a bike. You might get stopped by the police, especially in anti-gun OC and LA counties but at least with the cops around you the gang members might pass.

You can apply for a concealed weapons permit. Are you a celebrity ? A mega donor to democratic CA politicians ? A friend of the police chief ? If so, then you are good to go !!

dammit. i need to hurry and make my band famous. lolz
or i've been thinking or getting a .22 long rifle but decided to buy wheels instead. but whatever i didn't buy, i will buy on xmas.
i chose to get a .22 LR since it's cheap to shoot for plinking and if you headshot... the bullet doesn't make an exit wound and would just scramble somebody's brains.
this was my choice... but it seems a good scope cost almost or even more than the gun itself. >_<

You could weld the tripod ends to your handlebars and just swing and fire as you peddle. Of course, working the bolt action might be a problem for your follow up shots.
I love my .22's. I love being able to shoot them all day long for so cheap.
Maybe a well placed round in a bike thiefs thigh would be a good idea. I dont think a head shot is appropriate for them but a non lethal wake up call seems about right.
I;ve never ridden this SART that is so often talked about but it seems like a real adventure

On that news article by Salvador Hernandez, it gives you his phone number and email address. It would be a good thing to respond to Salvador to let him know that the bicycle community is concerned.

Why would anybody even ride in or though Santa Ana? That's just asking for trouble.

I live in Costa Mesa. My parents live in Orange. In between lies Santa Ana.
Riding through Santa Ana proper is probably safer. Because there are so many bicycle commuters, the drivers seem to be more aware of bikes. I could take Redhill, but that's way out of the way and a boring ride to boot.

I ride the SART and through Santa Ana to job everyday morning and evening. I've never encountered any trouble, perhaps it because I dont wear the lycra during the week, I wear jeans. IMO, the lycra makes me look whimpy and therefore like a victim. Of course on weekends I wear the lycra, but I still look whimpy and I become the victim of faster riders.

Why would anybody even ride in or through Santa Ana? That's just asking for trouble.Because there are some nice places to go? Because there are interesting things to see and do? I have never been hassled in all my rides in Santa Ana, and I've roamed around a good many parts of it, and not all of them the "nice" ones (like Floral Park). And I'm just a middle-aged Athena riding alone.

I'll ay it again, I ride thew SART 4 days a week on my commute to work. I ride as early as 0300 and as late as 2200 (some long days that is why I bike commute) if you keep your eyes open and try to be aware around Fairmont Blvd. all is good. There are lots of good people on the trail day and night. Wave say "Hi", and they will look out for you.
