3M is the best no doubt. I need to get some 800 and 1200 to finish up a project this weekend but I cannot buy locally. So I'll probably just settle for some of the cheaper wet/dry stuff I might be able to get at the True Value Hardware store.

I have plenty of that. But we use it at work for polishing Fiber Optic connections. That's the course grade for that job.

Not sure what grit the .3 micron is.

I normally go to 600 grit on my knife handles. I have some black micarta slabs that I want to look like this, so I will take it to 8,000

Don't you mean you're taking it "Ova 9000"?

I have used even finer lapping film than this... but 8000 is pretty fine.

.3 has an equivalent of about 15,000

Aproximately 24000 grit if it is a liner relationship I would think.

I don't think it's linear. I have some 0.5 micron 3M polishing film from Lee Valley...and they claim 9000 grit on that. I don't bother using it...2000 grit puts a nice micro bevel on my chisels and knives. Any finer edge, and you just lose it too quickly for the effort to be worth it.

I figured you were already the subject matter expert on that topic.

Once upon a time, I knew the equation for going from grit to particle size... would have been metallography class in '97.

Seems to me we never used finer than 1200 grit on our samples.
