Doing some timed track events at HDC tomorrow. Team Sprint, 500m, 2k, then the 4k, in that order.

State your guess in the text and vote early and often. Winner has the closest time under my actual time, and will receive an autographed picture of my spine X Ray. Other prizes include a 20 gallon garbage bag of Rkwak's back hair, one of RTC's prized issues of "Grannies and Midgets", and a chopstick Gary used to scratch under the bandages.

Awards will be given out 15 minutes after the results are posted.

Some info:

Indoor wood track at sea level
2 prior events
Form at 85%
Best 2k time is 2:26.73 (outdoor wood track on a hot day)
World record is 2:17

Did I see your name on the 508 roster for this year on a 2x team?

Oh hell no. I'm completely bored after 4 hours, I'd be veering off course at the first bar for a G & T if I had that staring me in the face.

2x team is almost not bad. you never ride more than 100 miles, and the 100 mile leg finishes with a ~40 mile downhill. It's still a deathmarch though-- heading for the bar is a much better idea. It was same first name and last one rhymes with yours on the roster.

i read the title and thought, "i didn't know Racer Ex was a rower." i guess five years of the sport just burned "2k" into my brain. that's the standard ergometer test for rowers - set the machine for 2000 meters and try to make yourself pass out by the end. one of the worst sports things i've ever done.

i don't know anything about track cycling times. i might as well put those times on the wall and throw a dart.

If you were at 85% you wouldnt even break 2:30 but because you are just underestimating your fitness (and will be riding Cervelo) I'm sure you will be attacking the WR :D

Good Luck!

Oh hell no. I'm completely bored after 4 hours

I got an email this morning asking if I was missing working the LAVRA races all day. It reminded me your 2.5 minute ride will probably take as much time out of your life as a leg of the 508... but at least you can sit around on a recliner while you're waiting around for your turn. I'll be enjoying the mountains this afternoon.

Arg. Not good. After doing the team sprint and busting a cap in the ass of my 500m PB by 1.5s I died on the 2k. Caught Hermes part way in and hit the gas to get around him before the corner.

Mistake.

Kaboom. Right off the cliff.

I am.

I was a little more cooked from the morning than I expected, and was probably a little over geared to boot. The 2k is dancing a very fine line between swimming in lactic and finishing strong. I fell in the damn pool and drowned.

Hermes joined me and a 45+ rider for the Team Sprint, these are open events so you race against the elite kids. We rode a very strong 3 laps, missed 3rd by 0.10s, I ended up missing 3rd in the 500m by 0.14s.

The 500m was particularly encouraging because 3rd place has won Nats in our age group at this distance and is a regular podium guy. He stomped me by over a second and change last year at states where I ended up 2nd. So I'm in the conversation now.

The guy who won the 2k beat me so bad they should give him my steak knives.

I had a great time racing team sprint with Racer Ex and our teammate. It is my favorite track event along with team pursuit. Here are some pics from team sprint.

The starting line. I was in the mechanical starting gate.

The exchange. There are two cones that define the exchange zone. The lead racer and the racer behind must clearly exchange by the lead racer leaving the sprinters lane the the following racer's front wheel crossing the lead racer between the cones. This exchange happens two times. Racer Ex was the last rider and rode three laps.

Our second racer was very fast and gapped Ex who was a slightly under geared.

The ones I've seen come from T-town have the bulbous head tube-- AFAIK, there are at least two different years. One has the bulbous head tube, and the other is like in the pics here. I have the one like in the pics here.

I am so jealous of you guys that have velodrome access. I have admired matched sprint forever and that goes back to the early 1960's for me seeing it on Olympic coverage in B&W . I thought that it was so cool even though no USA cyclists were involved. It was mental and physical at the same time and you had to be great at both.

Unfortunately my power profile says "pursuit". Not sexy on the track and it says "domestique" in road racing. It was the cards I was dealt.

When we decided to strike out from Texas, a velodrome was one of my 3 "has to have" points.

Talk to Bob Black at the next Gainesville TT. He's trying to put forth a serious effort to get a velodrome in our neighborhood.

That can also read "mass start"-- points race, scratch race, madison, tempo, miss and out. All tons of fun. Madison is about the most fun you can have on two wheels. The difference between pursuit and mass start is more in how your head works.

I don't do TTs. Totally not my thing-- I'll do a pursuit at states, and TP at states. I'm also not really a sprinter (I'd be one on the road, road sprint==track enduro), but I've done pretty well in mass start racing.

The best bet is getting J. Foley (U Florida AD) to buy into women's collegiate track racing for Title IX in order to keep football legal. That is a constant struggle for him and has led to first class women's lacrosse and softball recently because they generate lots of feminine athletes to balance out the huge number of male football players.

If the facility is built here at UF we might have a chance at track time, but I would bet on it. Any regular folk tennis players you know that get court time on the first-class UF tennis facilities?

How far (timewise) would you/do you travel to race on a velodrome. I'm sitting here looking at one an hour and 45 minutes away and thinking "Man, that's a haul."

I may be spoiled, or lazy, or both.

In my case lazy. I live 2km from a velodrome. I have only been to watch. It does look like a fun way to get my ass royally handed to me.

Encino and HDC are both less than an hour most of the time. Ironically, I'm less likely to go to the velodrome when it rains because traffic makes it about a 2 hour trip.

San Diego is about 2 hours (early morning) or 3-ish (rest of the time). I'd go there for bigger events (states, 2-day madison) but not tuesday night racing (though I'm not really racing lately, anyway).

I used to pedal about an hour to get from Univ. of Minnesota to the velodrome in Blaine. That was a pretty nice deal-- pedal there, race, and pedal home.

I live approximately 30 miles from Hellyer in San Jose. I race at HDC in Carson, CA six time per year which is about 420 miles away.
