I have just acquired an older Nishiki bike it has Nishiki, Backroads , Mountain Project Bike and 4130 printed on it. It is colored a teal with Nishiki in pink, serial number looks like s9c21613 any one know what year it is? I'm kinda guessing between 1990-1996.:)
Looked on derailer its suntour xcm

Your guess that the bike is early 90's seems about right. Some pics and info on the components world be needed to try and get a better date on the bike.

Have a look through How Old Is My Bike? (http://www.mytenspeeds.com/My_TenSpeeds_1/FREE_SITE_VINTAGE/VINTAGE_1_Start.htm), paying closest attention to Component Numbers (http://www.mytenspeeds.com/My_TenSpeeds_1/FREE_SITE_VINTAGE/VINTAGE_5_Component_Numbers.htm). Applying what you learn there will help you nail the vintage of your bicycle.

unfortunately bikepedia only goes back to 93, however the 96 is listed as colored "Bright sand, Sequoia Coast Linear" which may be teal and pink. but from 96 on it was made from 7005 aluminum, 4130 is cro-mo. earlier models do not have the color listed but maybe you can match it up by components.

Suntour XCM is quite a bit older than 1996, look up the date code and you will have it.
