Southern California - Where you riding/not riding this weekend?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Prolly nowhere! Ride plans ruined! OK...OW!!! Last night walking in the door, Gina directs me to kill a spider under the porch. Every spider to her is like 5 feet tall so I take off my chancla, vertical leap into the air and POW! Nice shot but on the way down I hit the edge of the step, roll my ankle, land on my butt then roll into a half rear somersault on the cement. So now my ankle is stiff and the pinky toes burns like fire, hope it ain't broken! The worst part of it is that Gina has this weird built in radar for injuries. If I have a big bloody blister on my hand, that will be where she grabs me to squeeze my hand when she trips at the mall trying on new shoes. So now I'm hurt, missed my bike ride, and I can expect her to step on my foot a few times today! Not to mention she stripped me of my paycheck yesterday. Hmm, this married life can be rough at times. :D

Was set out to do self supported century following riverside citrus classic route. Started tad later but no big deal...Blissful and nice first 40 miles or so (all the while realizing this was a little hillier than I was expecting... climbed 4000ft by than already and I was thinking it was only 6000ft century or so...) figured it is all right still... than...
...
...
YUP, a flat.
...
under tree shade swapping a tube, taking out the thorn ... all good... let's go...
10 miles later
...
Another flat!
This time, there is a nasty gash about 1/2 inch long near side of tire. Glad I brought 2 extra tubes... swap tube in, ready to pre-pump and... well... the presta stem broke off?!
So I go back to the tube and put some instant patch thingy... using left over co2 from previous flat to pre-fill, put folded $10 bill for the boot...
Looking at the time, there is no way I am going to back by noon now if I plan to continue not to mention I am not comfortable with the gash on tire or having no more spare to rely on (burnt both CO2 cartridge as well as pump kind of jacked by the broken presta stub)...
Riding back to home (15miles) was one of most unnerving ride I've done in a long while...
At least, there are other activities to attend today... heading out to pool party with my kids :) Hope I took all the flat luck for you guys for today :)

Ouch thats tough, sympathies with the turned ankle!

Get it Xrayed if need be:)

Me am out to the local Water Park, not far but with a good few slopes and mounds to run my bike up and down and a nice river bank to ride along.

Then after that a Bike Festival Even with a few bike activities and info stall etc.

Should be good providing the rain that is hammering down tonight stops by morning like it is supposed to and the sun comes out like its supposed to:thumb:

Sorry to hear about the ankle Beanz. Did you ice it right away?

Most likely a sprain of some kind.

Get well soon.

I wish you had a video of this so we all could laugh with you, kind of like AFV. As far as the "chancla' goes, this, ah, flip flop should be more funny than most of Rommeny's.

No Jed, it was late, today been busy but I have to go to a dance recital tonight. If I can live through that, I can live with a jacked toe.:D

Ankle is pretty good actually, it's the little toe.:p

Not only did my mom whack me with hers, she could hit me on the fly when I would run. Even around corners!!!

Fri: coast to Fallbrook for a 7/11 lunch of donuts and Mt Dew.

Sat: sat at home and listened to insults when the club ride passed my house.

Sun: Bonsall, De Luz, Temecula, rainbow, Fallbrook. I don't know if the group is getting faster or if I just suck more. I don't think it's the group.

Hey Beanz, hope you're feeling better. And don't be mad at Gina. One wise lady (don't remember her name) once was asked if men are necessary. Apparently she replied that "until there are spiders to be killed and jars to be opened - men ARE necessary". :notamused: ;) :D When my wife asks me to kill a spider or open a jar, I take it very seriously and with a great deal of pride. :D

Saturday, I did my brownie ride, Pioneer Park in Azusa to the Crystal Lake Cafe. 48mi rt and and over 5300 ft of climbing. The Cafe has the best brownies and banana nut bread. The cook is a french chef. The tuna salad and chili are out of this world. Too bad, he said the restaurant side will close after this season. :( LP prices are killing him and he can't make any money on the food he cooks. The market side (gatorade, water, camping supplies) will remain open.

Sunday, I did an easy recovery ride on CCT. Love that fresh pavement around the 605 and 405!

It is closed underneath the 5. Ignore the official detour to Artesia. (WATCH OUT for the detour sign on CCT @ Artesia; It's bolted to the ground and not painted orange if you're heading SB) I picked up CCT at Firestone next to the big RV dealership. If one's heading south on CCT, exit at Alondra (the Drive in Swap meet), take a right on Alondra over the freeway, a left on Marquardt and a really quick left on Firestone, go past Mike Thompson's and there it is. It's even easier on the way back with right turns. It looks like it will be closed under the 5 for quite a while.

As far as resurfacing, it was fresh pavement from the 605 on south.

I hadn't ridden CCT in 4-5 months, so all the fresh pavement was a pleasant surprise.

I also rode CCT yesterday without a helmet. I rode for decades before helmets became functional and popular. I had forgotten how great it feels to ride a bike without a styrofoam beer cooler strapped to one's head keeping all the heat in. The wind blowing through what's left of my hair was exhilarating. Anyone else go helmetless from time to time?

Question: What does CCT stand for?
I ride without my helmet more often than I would like to say and I love it! I always wonder whether a helmet is really "safe" as companies make them out to be...but that is a discussion on a different forum.

I forget mine, once in a while when riding the mup, but feel I need it on the road. There 's this one poster who's already postsed on this thread who I don't think owns a helmet...

CCT= Coyote Creek Trail. It runs from the Seal Beach/Alamitos Bay border up to Foster Rd. in La Mirada. Though, technically, the southern end is the San Gabriel River Trail (SGRT).

Me! I think I'm in your boat (some hair left :D) but I still love it. I even tried to organize a "helmets optional" ride on this forum but with no luck whatsoever. Maybe you, Jan Feetz and I can join forces and try again. How about a "helmets optional" GMR ride some time in July? :D
Hey Genaro, I do own a helmet (actually two of them). And over the duration of my cycling career I have bought 4 helmets, so I've done my part to support the Chinese economy. :p

I certainly wouldn't descend GMR without a skid lid, but next time I'm there, I may strap it to the bars for the climb up. I am a believer in helmets. A Bell saved my skull in an OTB excursion while mountain biking in the mid 90's. It just comes down to risk vs. reward.

I said "helmets optional" with the key word here being "optional". ;) You can wear your helmet half of the way, all the way or no way - it's up to you. I have no intention to lecture people what to wear while riding a bicycle.
I think I'll post a GMR ride for next month. I've got some scores to settle with all those who called me a "weather wuss" some time ago. :notamused: :D Hope Beanz will be fully recovered by then to document the event. Hey, Mr.B - did you figure out what's wrong with the toe? Hope nothing broken. I'm sure a lot of us will be missing your videos and ride reports, but don't rush to get back on the bike.

The 4-th of July sounds good. I would have joined Genaro, but he mentioned something about 6:00 AM start. That's prohibitive. What time and where do you plan to start? I'd suggest 8:00 AM start from Glendora High School. I'll try to sucker some of my cycling buddies into this too.
