IG chain only--more shimano BS?

Hi, a cassette I'm instaliing for someone says "IG chain only." It is a new 7sp one.

This is a indexed project--perhaps IG chain makes the shifting smoother or something. But is it absolutely neccesary? Or is Shimano simply trying to make money?

Thanks

An IG cassete has shifting ramps on both sides of the cog, and is desigend to be optimum with IG chain. So it's not exactly 100% BS. Sram claims their chains work with HG or IG.

In my experience, as long as you put a chain designed for modern indexing systems (most from KMC/Shimano, SRAM, Wipperman/Connex) differences in shifting quality/smoothness are negligible.

That means IG as opposed to HG, which essentially means, 7 speed chain and not 9 speed chain. Get a SRAM 8-speed chain and you'll be great.
