Bicycle Mechanics - rx-100 derailleur, trek 1220

hi,
I have a old trek 1220 that has 7 gears on the cassette, with an rx100 stamped on the derailleur...
the brifter seems to be inoperative and was considering what my options are if I decide to go with bar end shifters... how high can I go with indexed shifting? the rear wheel does seem to have room for 8 gears but is currently using a spacer.

any info would definitely be appreciated...

also: I have an 8 speed bar end shifter (sl-bs64-8) that says it works with the ultegra 8 speed system... however when I installed this, I could only get 5 clicks out of the shifter (although it does seem to shift compatible with my derailer...
any ideas of what the problem is? thanks!

old 1220 came with a wheel that fit 7 speeds, not 8. So maybe it is a replacement wheel, otherwise, 8 speed is not going to fit. Measure it: 6/7 speed are 126mm, 8/9/10 are 130mm wide on road bikes.

I have found barcons to be extremely reliable.

7 speed STI are rebuildable and have good value (once functional). Guy on facebook does them for all over the world.

ok 8 speed cassette would fit on the wheel... but would my derailer be able to handle it? (assuming I can get a barcon that works for 8...) and any ideas about the barcon and not being able to use it for 8 speeds?

Are you sure that you were in the highest gear position when you installed it?

yes... though the original way that I installed was with the internal thingy (technical term) not aligned with the shifter... so I had to use the friction setting... so I read where I went wrong and readjusted that internal thingy to be aligned... after that I got some good clicks out of it but not the number I was expecting...

also I did put the shifter all the way down during the original install with the chain on the highest gear ( the smallest cog) .

another wrinkle is that I purchased this set from someone on ebay so that might add some info as well...

Just fix the shifters that came with the bike. 99% of the time, you can take the "blade" off the body, flush it out really well with something like Brakleen to dissolve the old grease, and then lube it and it'll be perfect.
